UPDATE !!!

All, it did it again !!!

Just this morning, I accessed the unit via usb mode - and I deleted off all of the MP3 files.

When I restarted the unit to bring it back up in Garmin mode- the dreaded 'maps locked' error was there - and it now was in default or 'stripped' mode.

I called Garmin - (93 minutes wait time) and was given to software support - they did a remote assist, and downloaded a file to my machine.

That fixed the locked maps - but I still have to rebuild all of my settings, etc. (Minor effort)

The software engineer I was dealing with did not know why it would do this - he indicated they would be looking at it.

I'm thinking it's something in the process I was doing that's creating the problem. Twice in 1 month, on two different machines - that points to the user, your's truly.

So - unless Garmin does a fix, I'm staying away from the MP3 function - I seem to recall the first time this happened, I was also doing something with the MP3 files.

This is just bizarre. I have not (yet - knock on wood) had any problems with my 2730 and the MP3 function so apparently you've discovered some secret-key-press-combination-code-thingy. Were you using he same Firmware versions when this happened?

Each time this happened, I was using the latest firmware version -

Yes, It's Bizzare.

Hmmmm...... could it be the Deep Purple?

!!! Welll POOOPSY !!!

So I grab my 2730 to do some updating for a BBG this weekend and the thing freaks out on me. Best way to explain it is to say "DITTO" On Hal's (Kaitsdad)'s experience.

Interesting that after my problem I googled hard for anwwers and this thread was by far the most relative of anything that I found on the internet.

I've screwed with all the things Hal did (before even reading this thread). I was able to remove and then replace some files via the USB mode and that got rid of the "maps locked' error, but then it would tell me no detailed maps. ARGHHHH!!!

I uploaded new Mapsource as there was a minor upgrade. But I'm certain this was not the issue.

However, something new, i was able to load specific parts of the US map (just as if you were adding topo's of mexico or other custom maps) ...you know, where you use the map tool then as you roll the mouse over a region it oulines in yellow, and when you click it turns pinkish and adds that region to the maps tab. I never recall it doing that before ..and why should it?? ..the 2730 has all these maps in it already -in a supposedly just as detailed but better compressed format.

Anyway, I manually loaded the regions that I need for this weekend and it seems that it will work. Not anywhere near the solution I want, but perhaps I can get by this weekend and maybe next. Damn, not good timing!!

I'm not a happy camper ....and while Hal's post here are encouraging as far as Garmin's tech support ...I really don't want to send this in.

Oh well, ..

Anyway, ....just note to

- share your pain LOL

- inquire if any words of wisdom that perhaps anyone has now as I see quite a bit of time has passed since this thread came about.

OH, ...and like Hal, I can't be sure what did this ...but I know that when I went in to delete some MP3's it hung and I had to turn the unit off. Also, I loaded a "route" which I've never done before (typicallyjust throw in waypoints and manually go through them while riding).

Not sure if either of these two things triggered the problem ...but i have a suspicion that one or the other did.

2730'd too much tonight in Reno ....john

John, I'm fairly certain that I did it by not executing a 'graceful' usb exit - wherein you click on the little 'remove hardware' icon, and shut it down via software. Just turning it off seems to eff it all up.

I would suggest that you call Garmin first thing Tuesday morning, and have your unit turned on and attached to your computer - they can remotely access the unit and fix it.

Since I had my joy with my unit last year, I've followed the graceful disconnect religiously - and haven't had a problem.

And good luck with your ride!
