Gary Eagan - former IBR Winner, 2nd Place in White Pine Fever and holder of many World Record rides - is in the middle of a staggering record attempt:

Cross the entire length of Canada in less than 60 hours!

You can HEAR Gary providing periodic updates on the blog over on onewheeldrive.net, and some of his comments are HYSTERICAL!

Gary Eagan's World Record Ride - audio blog

Among some of the things Gary has endured so far:

- an unusual encounter with the Royal Mounted Candian Police!

- part of his Ducati's fairing ripped away, exposing his battery to the elements.

- his bike shop installed too high a wattage bulbs in his aux lights, the alternator can't keep up. Gary alternates between freezing or running blind. Fun stuff!

- He was propositioned by a 14 year old runaway girl.... this story is a RIOT!

- He appears to be *significantly* ahead of schedule, but still has a lot of territory to cover....

Really, really good stuff here.... :D

I think he can do it.

I did Edmonton to Kingston in 30 hrs, which is more than half of it.

If anyone hears where Gary intends to finish in Halifax let me know. It would be interesting to go and witness the finish.

The voice snips are a great touch. He sounds great. After 18 hours I could hardly talk and had to try several times to explain to the young lady behind the gas counter why I needed her name and address and signature on my end of ride gas receipt.

Ride safe Gary and stay tucked in behind those big rigs cause the deer and moose are an increasing hazard all the way to Halifax. Godspeed. I've done the Halifax-Vancouver trip many times and my best was a blistering 168 hours (7 days).

Deer, Moose, Rednecks, Runaway's, fog, and freezings temps. Man oh man does Gary know how to have a good time.

He must have some big cajones to keep up pace after witnessing the deer and moose kills.

Well, I can honestly say that I've never considered a semi truck as safety gear. However, I may just have to get one ......

Very impressive. Has anyone done the math yet?

the mp3 voice calls are great . It take someone special to do something like that in those conditions . i looked at the ducati web site and the bike he is on does not look like a l/d type bike .

Gary's an accomplished rider. He's also a nice guy and, while soft-spoken, he can crack you up with just the right comment at the right time.

"Ducatittie! Why would someone ride a bike without breasts?"

Okay. I've got a few questions and I am curious if an answer can be had. In his last audio message he talked about the fact that he didn't think it was a record. He thought Thane Siliker held the record around 39 hour. As far as I know from an article a few years back in Cycle Canada I thought Thane's record at that time was around 69 hour for the 5700km trip. I find 39 hours a bit hard to believe. That works out to an avg speed of 145 kph or 90 mph. Garys ride works out to an avg speed of around 111 kph or 69 mph. Which is quite impressive. Being Canadian I know what the roads and conditions are he had to deal with.

I am _assuming_ he will be certifying his ride with the IBA. The IBA being _the_ association that certifies these rides.

But for obvious reasons they are not forthcoming on actual speed-time of these rides when they list the results. They only state its "less than" a certiain amount. In this case the ride would be the Trans Canada Gold which has to be done in 75 hours.

So is there anyone out there with the inside information that can answer definitively (as possible) the following questions with a simple answer of "yes"-"no" or "no_answer". I have tried to make these questions as non-specific on times-speed as possible since I understand the sensitivity of the issue.

A- Was the previous record held by Thane with the approx 69 hour run?

B- Was the previous record held by Thane with a run faster than his 69 hour run?

C- Was the previous record (no matter who held it) better than 60 hours?

D- Will Garys ride (when certified) become the new fastest time?

This is an FJR site and probably not the best place to ask such a specific IBA question.

I suggest you pose the question directly to the IBA via PM or e-mail. Ira Agins is probably a good contact. See this link.

I spent about an hour and a half talking with Gary last Sunday at the Duc open house. Quite the Man for sure and really enjoyed some stories and great information learned from listening....
