It seems lately that every time I log into the Forum website, there are more and more people backing out of attending NAFO for whatever reason. Many simply send a board- directed message for all to see, while others do not.

I can’t help but think the cost of gasoline must be a major factor. Anyone that drives 30+ miles each way to work must be feeling the hurt! It is disappointing to hear so many are choosing not to attend.

Beans and burritos will do that to ya

I'm looking at around $600 in gas for 2 weeks. Hoping it will be less.

Sure is disappointing, to see members falling by the wayside. There are people who I was looking forward to meeting, who are no longer able to attend.

I think the gas prices may be one of the causes, but life circumstances are a bigger one. We are the generation with responsibilities towards kids, jobs, parents etc all at the same time. To allow me the luxury (both time and $$) of two weeks on the road, I'm working almost ninety hours during the week before leaving for NAFO.

And.... for anyone who is hurting for gas during a long commute, get a bike! It might take a bit of juggling to get with the work clothes, hair and make-up for those of us who are into those things, storing protective gear, but it's worth it. While my co-workers have to suffer an icky commute, I get to enjoy a bike ride twice each day. :clapping: My little Ninja racked up 67mpg this week.

Not an unusual amount at all. Same thing happened about this time last year with WFO.

Let's see.....238 paid attendees including 6 new sign-ups in the past few days. About 4-6 people that have indicated they likely will not come for various reasons.....none of which have shared with me gas prices as a reason. It's a very similar ratio to WFO last year.

I do think recessionary pressures and gas prices have made it so we didn't have quite as many sign-ups as we guessed for the first national gathering, but it's totally clear to me we have a metric buttload of FJR owners descending on NAFO in about 15 days.

There is a bunch more room juggling going on this year because of the hotel being sold out though.

The glass is far more than half full. ;)

From a non-attendee, Has nothing to do with the price of gas, if I could find the time, I would be there, even if I had to melt a credit card to do it.

Freeking Work! :(

Haven't heard that one before........

Actually, I'm thrilled to see such a low rate of attrition. For these kinds of events, one might normally expect to see a 10% attrition rate (in fact, that is what the hospitality industry normally budgets) and this being an informal (non-business) type of gathering, I fully expected to see a higher rate.

So, like Gunny, my glass is freakin' overflowing!

Game on, Garth!

Party on, Wayne!

Iggy didn't indicate whether it was square metric buttload or cubic metric buttload, so I'm assuming it's a linear metric buttload which could become uncomfortable if all of those 238 attendees are buttloaded end-to-end. Whose butt is being loaded I have no idea, but it's a rather sickening visual nonetheless... :p

Gas isn't the only thing, but it is a big thing. My plans have changed. I was originally planning on pulling my trailer and camping some days. With the difference in gas milage, it is not worth while anymore to camp. I drop down about 6mpg pulling the trailer. In 6,000 miles that's an extra $106 at $4 per gallon. Although it is still cheaper with the trailer the difference is not enough. We have also eliminated some side trips, which would have put us over 8,000 miles. I did not however think of cancelling.

Most are canceling, I think, because of work. I changed jobs recently, but the new employer is being supremely gracious in letting me keep these dates open (even telling me, "hell, just take the whole week!")... I'm still here Monday/Tuesday...probably not "working" :)

There are some people that are posting up their rooms as available because they are splitting the cost with someone else (which I'm doing). That will help a LOT; it was $310 for me, with a roommie, that's split in half. To me, that off-sets the cost of fuel for me. Now, those doing the IBA rides are going to burn more than those of us doing just the 250~ miles rides.

I thought myself foolish for signing up so early, but I'm glad I didn't wait until the last minute because of the room-shortage.

Worse for me. It's my *wife's* work that got in the way of me joining you guys. :(

She was going to come with me (there's some BMW Rally going on in CO) and we were going to "trade rallies". But then she got a book deal and has to stay home and write it.

So - why can't I just come by myself, I hear you ask? I made the huge mistake of asking the same question - short version is, I'm not allowed to go out and have "fun" if she can't come with. :(

Next year though....

ouch! that's not very generous of her considering this event doesn't happen every year. and its the inaugural one too! <_<

well maybe she'll let you go to your local regional gathering. i'd start proposing that now.

The buttload, be it metric or standard, is a volumetric measurement. The area measurement is buttprint. Of course there is also the lesser length measurement of buttwidth, and moving into 4 dimensions yields the fart. :pardon:

That's on-topic, right?
