Ok, so you guys with the VW diesels, what kind of mileage you getting? Please be specific as to what years, as I know the engine sizes have changed.

Mike

People are just bitter because once again the Japanese manufactures did it better.
Er, dude? Like, chill, K? I ply the highways of California most every day. Typically in excess of 75,000 miles per year (well, not so much lately) so I see a lot on the highways. And I'm only telling you what I see and that is; for the their percentage of the automotive population, I see an unduly high number on the hook. How can you fault me for reporting what I see? I didn't put them on the hook, I just saw them hanging there...

As for the rest of your comments, you're making me feel as though I attacked your wife or something!

This is what I said:

IME, I've seen more Hybrids on the hook than their percentage of all vehicles would warrant. Makes me kinda hesitant to consider Hybrids - at this point. Also, you have the long term question of battery disposal.
Please note the "at this point" comment. That means that I am open to the concept but still skeptical of the hybrid concept. IMO, the hybrids are a stop gap for a permanent solution. And there are still contaminants left over from recycling batteries. Sure, it's a small issue when under a million hybrids are on the roads, but what happens if we put 17,000,000 on the road each year as we do with conventional vehicles?

Sorry, didn't mean to offend your cute little girly car...

I may be heading off-topic here (but with this thread that would be hard to distinguish :)

What 2 wheeler offers incredible mileage and yet still some performance for us used to bikes like the FJR? I can't see myself going to a Moped or the likes. But, if I could get something that was quick enough to out accelerate the hybrid cars and still run 75-80, and have the brakes and cornering to feel comfortable doing it, I'd consider it. Are there any bikes that get considerably better mileage than the FJR?

Maybe a Ninja 250 or such?

Had a 97 jetta 1.9L TDi 5spd and got anywhere from 37-50 mpg

averaged low 40's.

Now I have an 03 Jetta wagon 1.9L TDi 5spd and average low 40's, high 30's in the winter. If I'd take my foot out of it, the mileage would go up. I'll regularly get 45+ on long highway trips with the cruise set at 75mph.

gtex, do you consider a Suzuki Burgman or the Yamaha Majesty mopeds. The are walk throughs but their performance is more motorcycle. I'm not sure what kind of mileage they get though. I assume its better than the FJR but not quite as good as a moped. Probably 50-60mpg range.

When we were car shopping the wife wanted " small with good gas milage ". We ended up with a Jetta with the turbo / diesel. It gets 42 to 45 around town and 50 /55 on the freeway ( depending on who's driving and how much lead is in the foot :D ). So far it has been trouble free for 40,000 miles.
Speedjunkie.. maybe ya missed this first time around? 2003 BTW

And Spike..... Your car is still UGLY :D Ranks up there with the 72 Gremlin and the Pontiac Aztek!

You're right Highlander, I did miss that. I went down to the VW store today and drove one, impressive really. I like the Tiptronic transmission. The engine had more grunt than I thought it would. I priced it and immediately ran away. 31K!!!! With my wifes employee discount it's still 28K! Plus their numbers don't even come close to what the VW website says. Wonder why that is? <_<

Mike

So back on topic...

I can't commute on my FJR because:

it's too hot,

it ticks,

needs a 6th gear,

doesn't handle well in the twisties,

a busa is faster,

the tranny shudders,

the driveshaft leaks,

the metzlers blew up,

it's not as comfy as an ST1300,

the superbrace took out the brakes,

it's buzzy @ 4K

and it's not as fast as the 03.

:bleh:

Did I miss anything?

Crap, all that and I'm still a Solo Pilot. Happy fall riding everyone.

I just handed-down my 93 GEO Metro to my Nephew. I wanted to keep it till 200,000. It has 208,000 now and will get 50 mpg when driven reasonably. BTW brake rotors and exhausts were the only problem areas. They don't make the 3 cylinder anymore.

I think the hybrid is great for the treehuggers  (which I ain't one of), but if you're looking at your wallet go to THIS URL, then click on the item in "Press Box" near the bottom right of the page for the results of Edmunds.com research.

We, being the UofM, have a small fleet of Priuses (Priusi?). They have been, for the most part, pretty reliable. A campaign/recall took care of an engine mgmt problem on the 05's, not a problem that put them on the hook. The biggest problem has been their odd start up procedures, and the fact that too many people are crashing while playing with the Nintendo screen instead of driving the damn things. Both problems could have been solved with a read of the owners manual, but one doesn't dare mention that to the countrys future PHD's.

That Edmunds blurb was splashed on several of the network news broadcasts last night.

Scooze me, but I'm in need of a tree to hug...

@radman,

Prii? You know, like radius/radii?

OK, Diesel numbers;

1999 Jetta TDI - No kidding 45-50 mpg.

2005 Passat TDI - 40-45 mpg (just broke-in)

Wife mainly driving about average, not a lead-foot but fairly aggressive.

Chevrolet 1 Ton Dually - Empty 18 mpg

- Towing a large trailer (14,000 lbs.) 12 mpg

Cool huh! :agent:

Oh, you *******! ;) I'm so jealous!

I'm getting to hate this state... Friggin' tree huggin', Jane Fonda, Tim Robbins lovin', Pablum pukin', commi pinko ****! ARRRRRRRRGH  :***:

2004 Jetta TDI. 52 mpg on the highway. Lowest ever 42 mpg.

Great car for the wife.

One tank of gas goes 750-800 miles on the highway.

Since this has turned into a TDI thread, here's a site you TDI'ers may be interested in. I stumbled on it a while back when I was searching for a steel skid plate for our veedub.

And good luck speedjunkie.. play hardball!!
