GB 500 ENGINE SWAP

I have a project bike, a GB 500. I got a 650 engine which is supposed to fit in nicely. I was thinking of glass beading the engine before painting it, but a friend said that it might be harmful, and suggested only steam cleaning it.

what sort of harm might the glass beading do?

Won't be harmful if it is sealed very, very well. And I mean every possible point of entry that the glass dust might find. Any of the dust gets into the oil,or onto the cylinder walls (directly or by way of an intake port) and the engine will be very unhappy.
