MY 2010: The windshield doesn't park in its usual position, it's higher / more forward than when it usually parks. The fully-up position seems unchanged. The linkages (or servo??) do chatter when the windshield is moving to its down position. Any suggestions for adjusting will be appreciated.

Gen II are known to eat the gaskets and pull them into the mechanism. I dunno how to fix it, but I've seen it here quite often.

Probably no way to do it without taking the nose fairing off. Which pretty much means taking all the fairing off..

It's not actually too difficult, and there's a reasonably comprehensive pictorial somewhere on the site. Just follow along, be careful.. And take note of where the various bolts/screws/fasteners install.

When I first dismantled mine, I noted original placements using my camera, and stored each set of fasteners in labelled plastic baggies.

The nose fairing lifts off without too much drama, but it is a tight fit, especially when you put the thing back on.

woof is doubtless correct, and your stuck mechanism is likely due to one or more of those pesky rubber gaskets getting jammed in the works. Once you have the fairing off, you'll be able to assess the situation, and extract the rubber bits. Throw 'em away, if you like, or replace them with some pieces of bicycle inner tube. Glue 'em in place with some black RTV silicone.

Also, once you gain access, check the cable tension on the rube-goldbergian mechanism. It may require re-tensioning. Note that the tensioner has a locknut, and is a flimsy POS. Take care to not overtighten. All the cable guide wheels should turn smoothly, and there shouldn't be any noticeable slack in the cable.

Take your time with the job.

Good luck

Since there's some chatter when moving down, make sure to clean and lube the glides when you have the nose off.

Took my fairing apart, posted here, and my pictorial: https://atrophy.lock.net/pi/20090924/index.php

[edit]There's also a tutorial by kaitsdad here.

If it's not the rubber washer, general view of the mechanism:

The upper microswitch can be seen at the top of the right-hand runner (left in the picture).

The lower microswitch can be seen in this pic:

+1 on the gasket.

Mine came loose as well. I pulled the nose fairing off and removed the gasket. It wasn't torn up so I thoroughly cleaned it and removed all of the tape and adhesive residue from the gasket and fairing. Degreased with isopropyl alcohol to prepare the surface. I re-installed the gasket using some 3M double sided trim tape. After 1.5 years, its still intact. It takes some time but isn't too difficult. Having the nose off allows an opportunity to check a couple of the spiders that are hidden as well as clean/adjust the windshield mechanism. A little silicone grease on the edges of the gasket where the windshield arms pass through will help eliminate the chatter.

I also removed/cleaned the headlight boots and gave the sealing surfaces a swipe with silicone grease. Good thing because it was a bitch getting them off and a couple months later I had to change headlight bulbs. Would have been a lot more difficult if I hadn't fixed up the boots while I was in there.
