We should have a bit of a warm up for this weekend so it should be fun working up in the mountains. Who is in for this trip to Young? I could use some direction as I have never been. Sunday the 3rd at 8 am at Ellsworth and Brown Chevron or 8:45 at 4 Peaks parking lot off the Bee line.Marty

I just got off the phone with Marty Meitl and the "Four Peaks and On To Young" is a go for this Sunday, January Third!!

You can meet Marty at Ellsworth and Brown Chevron at 8 am, if you live East of the Beeline. Coming from Chandler, I will be in the 4 Peaks parking lot off of the Beeline Highway at 8:45 am; the entire DS crew will depart at 9 am sharply!

Hey, you street *******! Check out the mud field that 61 year old Papa Chuy was riding last Sunday; kicked my sorry old ***!

First 65 miles of off road dirt were easy-peasy, then my buddy Marty and I hit mud a foot deep; a mile of that and I was toast!

Yes you can make it up the Mountain,crossing the mountain is another story... Our ride started at the base of 4 Peaks lot just off the Bee line. We checked our phones for any late comers then took off when all was clear. It was quite a chilly ride at highway speeds and was nearly tempted to plug in the jacket.the ride up to the top was clear with only a smidge of snow on the North facing trails. There was however a pucker moment on the East side of 4 Peaks as we entered a fully shaded section that was snow covered and slick. I believe on an earlier trip Don and the crew had to push each other up this section.

Next stp coffe at the Butcher's Hook. We start up a conversation with a local that is impressed with out machinery and we share our planned route which at this point is A Cross, a nice trip along the Easter side of Roosevelt

"That will be boring on those bikes" is the response from the hunter. "You want to head up over Picture Mtn" When we ask about the passability he says he was just up there in his pickup and had no problem. So Don and I agree to give 'er a try. In the back of my mind I am thinking what gypsy tech has warned about but am compelled to give it a shot.

So we are off up the hill, passing the Indian on horseback (picture mountain) I think it looks more like a guy driving an end loader.

At this point we are well on our way to the top still on rocks and past the fist sized boulder field. We rest to shed some clothe as it turns out to be a great day. From here it is a short trip to where the trail turns to soil.

I don't know what tire Don has on but it much prefers the asphalt. I glance back to see him dabbing his way through the trail. We come upon some archers and ask about the trail condition. After they stop laughing they say it is alot tougher than what we have just come through. Undeterred we press on and true to their words the trail has deep ruts that cause the jugs to plow as I proceed. But the depth of the ruts also makes easier to paddle along. We encounter snow covered trail and frozen over ruts. But hey, I have a fresh TKC 80 and a high front fender so the going is ok.

I stop and wait for Don, his front ire appears to be sliding not rollong along. s he comes to a stop I grab a pine stick and clear the caked on mud that has engulfed his front caliper and packed under the fender. " I am running out of gas " is his reply. I offer to scout ahead and see if travel is realistic.

The going does indeed in prove as I am traveling in shade on snow covered trail. But as soon as i come to a clearing the mud clings and nearly puts me down. "No way" I say to myself and head back to Don to get him turned around.

With Don turned around we opt for a hardy lunch back at Punkin Center. I wave to Don to lead but as he approaches I see again his wheel is sliding and promising to dump him so we decide to remove the fender. After using assorted tool the fender is ready to come off. Not thinking of the suction the mud has on the fender I attempt to lift it off and it breaks in my hand leaving a trophy for the forest trail.

So here we are out of the woods , well almost, only about a 1/2 mile to dry and rocky footing. Well the rest is not so exciting. We make it to Punkin a bit more experienced and tired but not fallen. Not once did the dirt claim us. It is trips like this that make memories and tire choices for future rides.

We promise each other to attempt this route in May, or at least give it a shot.

Oh yeah...that looks like fun....NOT!

I guess I'm a "fair weather" rider and prefer hard-packed dirt roads to slippy-sliding-mud-slinging-snow-packed dirt trails with ruts.

But, you had fun and survived! :yahoo:

Outstanding Don! Welcome to my world this time of year. I'm glad you wrote a ride report. I had fun reading the narative after seeing the pictures. Looks like great fun, but ya need a real bike with higher fender (oh yeah, no problem now :assassin: ) and a bigger gas tank. Seriously, When I'm your advanced age there is no way I'm riding in that stuff.

Great report Marty! And kudos for getting El Burrito Ballerina into the mud! This is how it's done north of the border Chuy! Ha! Love that last picture.
I'm impressed you guys soldiered onward, snow and all.

Steve, Marty did an excellent Ride Report and Great Photographs, so I'll do the Food Report; since I do love to eat!

Even though Marty and I just had coffee there this time, I really do like the food at The Butcher Hook Restaurant.

East of the gas pump islands, as you are looking at the complex, the store is to the left, the Saloon is in the middle and the Restaurant is to the far right. I have eaten breakfast and lunch a dozen times there over the last twenty+ years living here in Arizona and I have never had a bad meal there. Phone is 928-479-2712; Hwy 188, Tonto Basin.

What was a great find for eating, and it's my first time eating there, is the Punkin Center Saloon; it is just south of the Punkin Center US Post Office. I'd stopped there for beers before, but had never ordered any food in the Bar.

Marty got a Hamburger plate and I got a Cheeseburger plate that was huge and delicious. A giant pattie was done perfectly, with two slices of cheese (not just one) and an enormous portion of fries. Bill was only $20 for two folks.

Now I'll do a Tech Report on the BMW F650GS Twin, which many of our Forumites such as Smilin Brad now own.

1) I went onto the ADV websites, after my front mudguard repeatedly fouled, and found this mud jamming situation is common to the BMW F650GS Twin. So, I ordered Touratech Sport Mudguard, Part Number 048-0330; $170.20.

2) Once out of the mudpit, I started thinking about my front wheel now throwing a rock up into my radiator, since there is no longer a mudguard. So, I then ordered Touratech Radiator Guard, Part Number 048-0135; $131.99.

3) I am now on a roll, so ordered Touratech Black Hand Protectors, Part Number 040-7081; $111.70; taxes $32.91.

So, after $446.80 spent at Scottsdale BMW, I'll definitely have mi "Salma Hayek" ready for Copper Canyon on 11/7!

It never rains or snows in Arizona, right; Ha, ha! I hope to find a second set of rims for my bike used, then swap between knobbies.

Orestes flys in Tuesday night, I'll let him pay me rent for Lucy and his room by showing me once again how to post photos; I know he's damn good at it.
