Old route 66 is just a few short miles from me, for what ever reason I have just never ridden it. Then having a commitment to be some where and do something at high noon kind of blows the whole day, even tho it's only going to take and hour of my time.

I decide to leave early and take the long way around to include some segments of old 66.

First stop was Williamsfield, IL, where I found this gas station convenient store beside the road.

and they are Rather proud of the fact that this never happened

Gas prices remember when

Next stop was Atlanta (IL not GA), I could tell it was a friendly place as I came into town

YO! Hal, I found you a Hot Dog.

The Palms Café is a 50's era road side diner complete with blue plate specials, not health food, real food, and quite tasty the locals tell me. I'll take their word for it wasn't brave enough to try it myself.

The Town library with a 40' clock tower out front is stunning, beautiful work

The locals in Atlanta told me a stop in Funk's Grove was a must do, as their product is not available in retail outlets or on national TV.

OK, they sounded sincere enough. Next stop Funk's Grove

Yess, hundreds and hundreds of gallon of it

No twisties, not even a very good sweeper, but fun never the less, sometimes traveling the prairies of Illinois remind me of being in a small boat in the middle of a calm sea.

can you say fog bank

I kept my appointment and headed West toward the river, the river roads are always fun, you can get in some turns and twists down by the river, to much fun to stop and take pictures.

I did come across a couple old barns, so heres to you O'vale where ever you may be.

Too funny! My company's headquarters is in Atlanta, IL. You were standing across the street from their headquarters when you took the shot of the library. You should also stop in the office building across diagnal to the library and ask them for a tour of the building. It's an old Mason's Lodge, complete with 19th century murals, a coffin (for wall decoration) and a piano.

Here's my Rt 66 shot from almost the same spot.

One of my colleagues organized the happy face on the water tower and several other "decorative" projects around town.

Nice report!

Nice report. I know what I'm going to be doing for a day or two when I'm on vacation in a week.
You may want to check this site State of Illinois Route 66 web site, Believe it or not, the most consolidated and concise information I found on our little piece of history was on an official state website.

utofeej, Atlanta, Was really good, felt like I had discovered small town America all over again.
