i got an 07 and i was trying to get to the battery the other day. I took off the 2 hex head bolts, but there was a plastic bolt/plug on the inside of the cover.. How do you get this off without messing it up? I thought about pulling it out with pliers, but i didn't want to mess up the piece.

I don't have an '07 so I can't be sure what you are talking about, but there are a couple of different types of plastic 'rivets' on the FJR. One type has a small phillips head in the center that you turn 1/4 of a turn to release. The other type, what I think you are looking at, has a shaft in the center. The end of that shaft sits flush with the top of the rivet when it is fastened. You simply push that center in to release the rivet, then you gently pull the rivet out. To re-install the rivet you push the center shaft up so it protrudes out the top of the rivet, work the rivet in place, and push the center shaft down so it is flush again.

Bingo....

Yep, I have an '07 and it's a plastic rivet that you have to push in the center in. Be careful not to push too hard or you can push the center piece all the way through the rivet and out the back side where it will fall into some mysterious space/time rift where socks go when they're in the dryer. You'll need a small thin screwdriver or you can use the head of a finishing nail to push the center part of the rivet.

My finger does the job just fine too :) just pust on it, it snaps and then pull out. Another caution is while getting them back in, the pin should be sticking out from the rivet, insert the rivet carefully not to bend back any of the inserts, then push the pin in flush with the rivet to secure it.
