"Glove" Box

I was going to get an adapter to charge/store my cell phone in the storage compartment.

Then I read the warning in the owner's manual that the compartment gets "extremely hot" and not to place heat sensitive items in it.

Anyone tried this or know how hot it gets?

Speaking from a Gen I owner's standpoint, you wouldn't want to keep your Snickers or M&Ms in there...but I've put 85,000 miles on my 04 and have always used the glovebox to store my cellphone when on the road.

Haven't fried one yet.

There are two ways to look at this. First, just sticking a cell phone in the glove box, as Howie describes above, and second, doing so WHILE charging it. I think the concept of something getting hot "in there" probably has to do with a small compartment's ability to hold the heat of a device like a cell phone, especially when it's charging. You know that your phone gets hot when it is charging: some more than others. Add to that summer time heat and/or sun shining directly on the compartment door and things can get warm in there. One possibility that I've used many times: when I'm charging my cell or my iPod, and I'm concerned that it might get too warm in the glove compartment, I just leave the lid open. I've never had anything pop out of the glove box while underway.

Problem solved.

I have carried gum in my glovebox for years. Never melted. I've also kept M&M's in there over numerous trips. Again, never had them melt. Maybe its a GenI vs. GenII thing.

I keep my joints in my glove box, they light quicker and seem to draw better.

Just lose the little rubber plug in the bottom and that'll help keep it cooler inside. DAMHIK....

Don't take a Gen I guy's suggestions on this. With their heat management in and around the engine, you might as well slow-roast your 'phone over an open barbeque pit. On my Gen II, I don't find the glovebox gets especially warm. I tend to leave it open anyway if I am charging electronics as I ride as long as its not raining.

GenII guy here. Charging my iphone in the glovebox hasnt been a problem for me. You could always do a nice farkle and add a fan if you are worried. Also, you could leave the top open as suggested above. There are other alternatives, like getting a RAM Ball and getting some sort of holster for it.

I forgot to mention, I would definitely not charge a cell phone or iPod in that little glove box with it closed. Will it destroy the phone? Probably not. Can you do it anyway? Probably, but then the risk involved depends more on the brand of cellphone than any thing else. Some of them get pretty hot while charging, or just while being used for that matter. However, those lithium-ion batteries don't like heat and it's likely you'll take some miles off their lifespan if you do this. The cooler they stay while charging, the longer they last. Unfortunately, because this takes time, many do it anyway assuming there's no harm. But since those little batteries are rather pricey, I'd rather not beat them up with extra heat.

No definitive answer, but a lot of entertaining replies!

Turns out my phone wouldnt fit with a cord attached. (With the cover closed.)

I'll just do it like I did with my old one. I have a usb adapter that plugs into a battery tender lead

and I just run a usb cord to the tank bag.
