Geez, I almost feel bad 'cept everyone is taking the "buyout". Guess there gonna have to live like the rest of us poor slobs here in Mi.

:jester:

No ouch. They took the buyout package. Good deal for the employees and just might save GM's hide. Better than firing the lot.

Edit to keep it semi within the GL's: Oh and they get to buy FJR's, too!

Almost impossible to comment on this and not be political.

If you build it [an American car that matches an FJR's pound for pound performance and value], we will come.

The new Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra GT500 is the ultimate. I would be VERY happy to buy American again on this car.

Uh....and what exactly about a Z06 Corvette doesn't fit this request to a T....??? If you like it a little more civilized and less expensive get the "regular" Corvette. If you want 4 doors buy a CTS-V with the vette motor in it. If you want the above AND luxury buy an STS-V with the supercharged Northstar.

If you don't think there are American made cars that fit the bill then you need to do some research.

A regular Vette at $46K, with 400 HP will still spank a $42K (42K, for a 'stang? Good grief!) GT500, with 500 HP all day long. Friggin' thing weighs almost 4,000 lbs! Poor execution, Billy.

And that STS-V? :dribble: Comes PDC to whoopin' up on the M5. Drop some pounds, change the gearing a bit and voilà!

I think in the end game, you'll see GM consist of Chevy, Cadillac and GMC. Saturn is now Opel and visa versa. Pontiac has been Aztec'd into mediocrity and soon, death. Buick's customers will not be around much longer and it's too late to re-create the mark as the 'American Lexus'. Like Olds, game over.

Not to start a socio/political thread here, BUT...... Many folks, particularly the coastal types, have had some good reasons (excuses) NOT to buy domestically produced cars in the past. The big three weren't listening, period.

Well, the quality, mileage, bang for the buck, operating costs, comfort, etc.. issues, are mainly a thing of the past! The new domestic products (and I mean traditional, big 3 companies), coming of the assembly line, have successfully answered (if not outright blown away), the majority of the criticisms of the past. Many innovative, and, dare I say, exciting products, are being introduced domestically, that should easily squelch all(if not most) of the negative stereotypes of the past. The American manufacturers, despite all of their well earned criticism, are REEEAAALLY trying to re-earn the American consumer's confidence back. The current draconian measures being taken (buyouts, plant closings), will NOT diminish the excellence of their current and future product offerings. There is some truly excellent product out in the showrooms now or in near-term pipeline. Some really talented people are working very hard to break old molds and give people what they want, at an extremely competitive price!

Stay tuned, and please keep an open mind.

This is not a paid endorsement!

America's heartland thanks your support!

Those are all fine cars, sure, but....

Not enough to convince the American car buying public to stem the tide, apparently. They love their Camrys and Accords, and Honda and Toyota aren't offloading employees by the tens of thousands.

I mention the GT500 as my personal top choice, overweight and all, because I like Mustangs, I've owned 2 GTs and my last 3 new cars were Fords. I take it you're a GM guy?

Good points, Toy. Now, if only the guy(s) doing the Solstice & Sky styling can be spread amongst the other divisions at GM and Ford wakes up and brings in some of it's Euro/Aussie stuff. DCX appears to be the only domestic bright spot and you can thank rappers, NBA players and wannabe gangstas for that (mostly). I recently bought an Accord, not because it's a Honda, but mostly because the domestics have nothing that pushed my buttons in my price/wants/needs range. If Ford brought in that bitchin' Euro Escort, with the hi-po motor, or GM with a diesel Opel...

'Detroit' is still sleeping save for a very few marks...

It's been all downhill for the unions ever since Jimmy Hoffa disappeared.

Oddly enough, I'll buy jap bikes, sleds, stereo equipment, etc. But Honda, Toyota and the lot do absolutely NOTHING for me when it comes to cars. Don't know why, but their styling and whatnot just doesn't excite me into paying the extra bucks for their product. But then I'm pretty much economy minded when it comes to cars. I've never bought one brand new and paid the first year depreciation penalty. I've also never paid more than $14K for any vehicle. I could prolly afford more, but big car payments really turn me off. Kinda like throwing money down the toilet.

I mean, they're just cages, so why get too fancy?

IMO its the unions that killed (are killing, almost killed?) Detroit! Learn to put lug nuts on a 74 Caddy and your set for life! You can almost never be fired and if you get laid off because someone invents a machine to install the lug nuts they still pay you for sitting at home! I wonder if Buggy Whip makers had those union contracts if we would still be riding horses!

BTW, the Jimmy Hoffa comment was intended as a funny, not a commentary on unions and their value, or lack thereof, depending on your point of view. Wasn't trying to turn this political.
