I am sure there are lists of things you should bring on a longer ride and I wanted to know if someone could help me find the thread? I have most everything packed now but if I had a list I could go over it to make sure I did not forget anything. Any help would be appreciated.

Pack all that you think you need and then leave 1/2 of it at home.

Me? Mr. professional traveler onna motorcycle

1. My worst underwear / {wear one day and throw away} Then stop and buy 7 pair at Walmart for

6.50 if you need more

2. Toothpaste - toothbrush - Bathroom stuff, etc.

3. Tent / sleeping bag, etc. if camping

4. One pair of riding boots/shoes/rain poetection stuff

5. One pair of sandles that can also be used in the shower if camping

6. Bike tools with puncture kit and small pump

7. One LSU or WV baseball cap

8. TWO sets of keys on different key rings clipped on both sides of your jeans/pants

9. Two longsleeves tee shirts or shirts that you like to wear under you bike jacket {short sleeves ok}

10. One heavy shirt iffin um going up into altitude

11. Two pair of jeans....one on / one off {my experience is that 3 pair is too many}

12. Three pair of socks...one on / two in tha bag {wash and attach to bungee cord and will dry in 30

minutes of flopping in tha wind on tha bike}

13. I won't waste my time saying helmet - gloves etc.

This list of mine was developed from 7 trips from NY to Sturgis, 5 trips from NY to Louisiana and at least 4 trips from NY to Florida. And, I always try and adhear to this theory:

Always make sure that you have your money, credit cards, spare keys, minimum clothing, shoes, helmet, gloves and coat. Then, anything else that you might have forgotten or anyghing else that you might need can always be gotten at Walmart or a Dollar store, cause they are everywhere.

The important thing is to NOT go running down the highway with a ton of crap on your bike that you will not need or a ton of crap that YOU have to rummage over everytime that you need to look for something.

Also: Carry a small notepad with you and write down everything that you use or did not use on this one week trip and use that infomation when packing for your next trip.

If your wondering why I specify REI microfiber clothes, it's mainly because the fiber used is so much smaller and tighter weaved that you can fit two pairs of pants and shorts in the space that one pair of blue jeans would fit. It drys really quick if wet, resists stains, is sunblock +50, cuts the wind etc. etc.

All this fits in my two saddlebags and the smuggler where everything is locked away and can't be fiddled with or stolen off the bike like a duffle bag, satchel or tank bag can while your paying for gas, using the facilities, having lunch or taking a few shots of a nice scenic view.

Hope this gives you a starting point with which you can modify to suit your needs.

The clothing kept me warm going up in the mountains and passes that got as cold as 39 degrees and did quite well going across the Mohave Desert in the middle of the day when the temperature in the shade was 112 degrees. Having the camelback rehydration system on my back was always great and filled with ice and water.

For the past 10 years or so my riding has been of the LD variety. My loving, understanding wife has gotten used to me leaving for 2 or 3 week rides. All of the other posters have given you good advice. I have found that other than the basics the most important carry items have been my GPS and raingear (good raingear) and weatherproof bags that you are putting all your stuff in.

I also carry a lot of camera gear when I ride. A waterproof backpack is a plus there.

I am never more alive than when I'm out on the road - and I intend to return that way!

More tools less clothing

+1 on microfiber

photocopies of front and back if drivers license,credit cards and passport (travel out of US)

Addition to some of the things I've seen on the other lists:

I put my stuff in 2.5 gal. plastic "Zip-lock' bags. they keep stuff dry even in a down pour ,, plus you can put your clothes & stuff in them ,, force the air out ( I lay on them ), zip them close and they take up less space..

MC riding pants ,, better protection ,, more comfortable,, cuts down on the pairs of jeans you take, just wearing the jeans in the evening to go out to dinner they can go 3 or 4 days that way..

A good warm windblocker fleece sweater,, in case it turn colder that you figure.

A cold weather pair of MC glovers in addition to my regular MC gloves.

I try to get at least one long range trip in a year,,, have a safe & fun trip...
