"Most importantly, the Z1 would eat the CB750 alive and floss with its spokes." :glare:

A yes, I was a pimply faced high schooler mesmerized by my college age older kewl dude neighbor doing burnouts in the street in front of my house with his Z1R. Couldn't figure out how he survived those block long wheelies, but then also never saw a stoppie back then.

I helped a buddy of mine sell his '74 not long ago. The restorer guy was ecstatic to get it for 1500....

Had a '75 "B" and still have a soft spot. Neat info. Nicely written I think.Good old days.
Thanks for that, OM -- stirred some pleasurable memories there. I also had a '75 Z1 "B" -- in that dark metallic green with black accent and gold and white striping, IIRC. Bought it used but in immaculate condition in January 1977. Sold it in '78 and replaced it not too long after with a new '78 Suzuki GS1000EC. The Z1 permanently changed my orientation in motorcycles to big Japanese inline 4s. I loved the power, smoothness and precision of its construction, especially compared to my previous bike: a chopped 1969 BSA 650 Thunderbolt.

Only thing about that bike (and contrary to a note in the article) is that I don't think the Z1 handled all that well. I mean -- it was ok for the time, but in twisties, it had the ability to get me too fast and too confident into corners that I thought it (I) could handle, only then to scare the bejeezus out of me at the apex when I was sure it was going to run wide and pitch me. Last time I did a get-off was on that bike, too -- relatively minor, but still required daily debriding of my rashed ass.

Still, I LOVED that bike and the memories I have with it. Oh -- to be back in the late '70s with the Z1 in Steamboat Springs or GS in Tahoe City again (and in my 20s). :dribble:

-Sigh- . .

Cripes! That was 30 odd years ago!

Yeah, I was only, um, .....eight, when I bought mine. :D

Now when you say your "baby", you're referring to..........?

Wow! I put a big-assed WHITE Windjammer on mine too! (I think white or black were the choices.)

At the time, I wasn't so aware of how it wrecked the looks of the bike.

There weren't very many options.

But golly, they were pretty. (I don't reckon naked was a term you'd have used back then.)
