I just picked up a new CBR1000rr last Thursday. It is one sweet bike(or it was for the first 178 miles). Went riding with a buddy on the Missouri back rodes. About 178 miles in going around a left turn front end slid out. Not sure exactlly why probbly my fault. so here I am tumbling across the pavement with Cbr at my side. I didnt know where the bike was but I was praying it doesnt come up and hit me from behind as I lay in Ditch. I was behind my buddy so it took a couple of minutes for him to realize I was not behind him any more. A few min. past and I hear his bike aproching and stop and him asking If Im ok. Of course I said oh yea im fine. Then I tried to getup off the ground ( first mistake ) boy that hurt. Some other cars stopped and someone call ambulance. We were in the middle of nowere and it took 15-20 min for ambulance. IThe only pain I was having was in the left shoulder but the ambulance persons decided that a Helicopter ride was in order so off I went to Columbia University Med Center in Columbia MO.

After about an hour of being poked oroded and X-rayed they determined that my only serious injury is a Broken left Scapula ( large bone in shoulder). Spent the night in Hospital and went home on friday 22nd.

Now trying to decide if I should turn into insurance or bite the bullet and do my own repairs?

Also note no hurry on repairs I wont be riding for the next couple of months.

Also I was wearing full protective gear and have ZERO road rash :yahoo:

Freaking noobs going out and buying 1000cc sportbikes.... :p

Seriously, glad to hear your going to be OK! Sounds like a hell of a way to break in a new bike though.

Well that S**ks, glad you're ok.

put some headlights on it and let the rest go, gives it character.

First off. Good to hear that you are ok.

As far as a bike goes. Looks like there are scratches on the swing arm. Possible scratches on the frame. Front is gone. Might be a minor few kK scare, might be a total. When was the last time you had a claim and how many will decide what you do and if you can afford to write off 10k bike.

NOOBS, Hell IM 42 and have been riding since I was a kid.

And the dam thing insn't even broke in yet only 178 miles

Never had an insurce claim yet but theres always a first.

I added up parts and came up with about $5500.00

Yeah, I would definitely file a claim. No sense in spending half the cost of the bike out of pocket when you can just file a claim.

Bummer about the broken bone, it's always nicer to come out of these things unscathed. It seems strange for the front end to step out unless there was sand. It seems the tires should have been scrubbed up okay by 178 miles.

I'd be calling insurance too...boy...$5,500 in parts. Isn't that about half the cost of the bike? :(

The zero road rash will make healing easier :)

Strange, since the front end feel on that bike is supposed to be second to none accoeding to British Bike magazine. Sorry about the first day wipe out. I am sure it took balls to post this. BTW, looks totalled to me and I would report.

A not completely scuffed, or maybe cold tire would be my guess, was it just after a break?

The OE tires on today's RR's are almost race quality & can require warm up time.

I wouldn't get too wrapped around trying to figure out as to why you went down. Just be real happy you walked away relatively unscathed.

Sport bikes are fun, but the handle bar position of such bikes IMO is not at all well suited for street riding. Way to much body weight sitting over an already heavily weighted front wheel due to chassis geometry. Convert that baby into a street fighter along with a good steering stabilizer (think Scotts) and your fun factor and cornering confidence will go up exponentially.

Good luck with a speedy recovery Mike.

Damn, That really sucks!

I am glad to hear your doing ok and i WOULD make a claim... Why bite the bullet and pay for it yourself??? That is why we have insurance right?

Heal quick!

Adam

Ouch!

I'd definately say insurance. Over 4 years, that would cost 114.58 a month. I very highly doubt your insurance will go up 114.48 a month due to a claim.

If an adjuster hasn't seen it yet, I might (accidentally) cause a little more damage to assure the thing is totaled out. I would want a new one.

Heal quickly!

Thanks for the Well Wishes

I have turned in the insurace claim thanks for the good reasonming

TSTAFF good point on cold tires this happened minutes after a break.

Did I say thta the first 175 miles were most excellent.

Just went to doctor and he scheduled MRI. Might be rotator cuff damage so mabey surgery  Which means loosing most of the summer riding season.

Thanks to all

Man, that totally blows! I mean it sucks that you wrecked your brand new bike, and that you did break some bones, but damn. Having to go under the knife sucks and will pretty much mean no riding this season. :(

Hopefully the doc will find that you don't need surgery after all.
