Got to ride an ST1300

My buddy in Texas bought an 07 ST1300 with no miles last week. I had an opportunity to ride it yesterday for about 20 miles. While it is a great bike, it is not for me. I did like the upright riding position, but I felt it was too top heavy. The throttle was even more sensitive than the one on my FJR.

So bottom line, I am very happy with my decision to own the FJR.

It is a great bike, and the silver is quite nice. It handled the curves very well, but at parking lot speeds it didn't feel as stable as the FJR (to me). Had I bought an ST, I am sure I would have gotten accustomed to it, but I like the FJR better.

Honda does make a great product line.

I remember reading one member's response regarding the ST1300 as compared to the FJR....and I am paraphrasing....The ST1300 is like a retarded little brother to the FJR1300. Still plenty to love, but.....

OK I have to ask; Did you ever come close to the max on the FJR speedometer?

I would love to take mine out on a race track someday.

I know of at least one road in Northern Germany - and maybe another two in Switzerland - when you could let her run without teasing the reins in.

I had a ST1300 for 18 months before the FJR. First of all, I had the bike to over 145 (indicated) several times and it was solid and straight. The wobble is an urban myth.

Secondly, the ST had zero vibration and it had excellent throttle response and modulation, and the bike's quality was extremely solid - more so than my FJR or Goldwing.

After that, its all down hill. I was not as comfortable on the bike after 150 miles as I am on the FJR at 500 miles. The FJR handles better, looks better and is faster. The ST was not a bad bike, it just didn't satisfy the sport side as well as the FJR.

5th gear on the rev limiter is around 155 mph. Thats with the bags on......thats all she got

I currently have an 04 ST1300ABS and a Black 08 FJR. Both are at the top of the Sport touring category. I find both have their pros and cons but nothing is perfect for everyone. To each his own really, but I enjoy both since both are great machines. To contradict one post about highway pegs, there are highway blades made to fit on the tipover bars which work extremely well. You actually can be going faster on the ST than the FJR and not really feel it as much due to the smoothness of that great engine, but that is not a knock on the FJR. It is a little more of a visceral machine and fun too (FJR). I likes em both.

take it to road america in elkhart lake WIsconsin. road course with a mile long straight. go as fast as you want. it's got a hump in the middle that can float your front wheel a bit. lots of fun. my ZRX topped out at 165 mph indicated. didn't have my FJR at the time.

The wobble is NOT an urban myth, but that is why I put the disclaimer on my statement. I have only ever met maybe 3 real life ST owners, and never heard any of them on a "civilian" ST complain about the bike wobbling, but our police bikes do. Around 110 to about 120-125 there is a discernable shake. It may have something to do with the added crash bars, or siren set-ups on the bikes. I don't dislike the ST, but I definately like my FJR much more.

I did exactly the same thing on the way to Vegas. Did not hit a rev limiter just twisted the throttle as far as it would go and hit 154 on the speedo.

It was butter smooth or I would not have tried it.

I'm lookin at making that same run towards the end of summer 09. You gonna jump a boat and start in PA or come through vancouver and across?

I just made that trip 2 weeks ago now and it was one of the best rides I have ever been on. I did the Grand Canyon about 2 months ago and 6 other national parks. I am really getting a lot of use out of this bike this year and I have done nothing but change the oil and the tires.

I got passed while accelerating through the 130's like I was standing still buy a CBR 1000XX superblack bird......but it was kinda cool when I pulled his lunch out of my saddlebag when we got where we were going.

Simple, I rode both back to back before buying the FJR. The FJR put a smile on my face. The ST sounds like George Jetsons car. I told the salesman that I was not old enough for the ST yet. . .

I owned an ST1100 for several years, and rented an ST1300 in 2006 to help me decide whether it was time to "trade up."

I had never read anything about the "wobble" at that time, but it sure was there on the bike I rode. It started around 115 mph, and cleared out a bit north of 125 mph. This was not the major reason I didn't go for an ST1300. Frankly, the ST1300 just didn't get me excited. It was still 700 pounds. It was snappier than the 1100, but not so much snappier that it put a grin on my face. It still handled heavy in my view. And while I was getting 48-50 mpg on the ST1100, I only got 42-44 mpg on the ST1300.

They were giving away 06 ST1300s early this year. A friend bought one, and then I picked up the FJR in June. We both like our own the best..... and that's the way it should be.
