I know I know its been talked about before. I decided to come out of the stone age and us GPS in a car. Wow I need one of these things for my bike and car and when I walk my dog. I like simple and easy to use. I don't need to take pictures with it like my phone. I never understood what a camera and a phone have in common . If I wanted to take pictures I would buy a camera not a phone. Why not sell a camera that you could place a call on. GET SMART could make a phone call with his shoe. May be they will design a T.V. to give good head. That would sell! And can I use the same GPS for my car and bike! So I am ready to be Be-littled on my lack of knowledge on this subject.

Yup just get a mount that you can transfer from one to the other like a suction cup for the car with a ram mount arm and cradle

There could be numerous solutions for you.

I'd first write down all the stuff I want the GPS to do -- then go find one that does that. Make sure it's water resistant -- think it's called IPX-7 rated or something like that.

Example:

I use a Garmin Quest 2 on my aprilia -- small, runs long on batteries (no wiring), easily removed, easily portable (even have TOPO's downloaded, and use it trail riding on a DR-Z400)

I use a Garmin 2730 on my touring bike -- hardwired, has XM radio, larger screen, good routing (3-D views), and the audio for routes will interrupt the XM radio. Using ear-buds (another discussion), I like the Etomytic ER-6i. Also has an FM modulator -- so can use it in my car, and play XM and nav instructions through the car stereo.

My wife uses a Garmin 530c in her vehicle -- CLA power, easy to use, works great -- built in speakers for nav instructions (not good for a bike though -- not water resistant)

There models with bluetooth, capable of overlaying NexRad radar images....

So ---- there's not a simple answer.

Well ok. If you need to be belittled it was Maxwell Smart who made the shoe phone calls, the show was called Get Smart. One of my all time favorite shows thanks to 99, who in my adolescent mind should have been named 69.

Only one hotter back then was Barbara Eden from I Dream of Jeanie. And maybe Joey Heatherton and Raquel Welch and oh yeah-Sophia Loren.

As you might have guessed, I don't know squat about GPS units.. :D

I stand corrected it of course was Maxwell Smart. Do you remember the CONE OF SILENCE! Thank you for all of the info on GPS. Now its time to shop for that T.V. I always wanted.

Keep it a bit more basic:

You NEED a unit to be waterproof, which elimintaes units like the Garmin Nuvi, C and i series and such.

You WANT it to support PC based routing, have a large tracklog and a sunlight readable display. Battery operation is a plus because you can dismount the unit to take it with you while you hike cross-country to get gas (for example). That eliminates most of the vehicular units in the 2000 series from Gamrin.

Having all of North America (or Europe, I guess) on board is a nice feature, but unless you are into four corners riding it is not a necessity - and even then, if the unit offers a removable memory system or you carry a laptop it isn't mandatory.

Mine? Garmin 276c. 16 hours of battery autonomy, the highest screen resolution out there. Large tracklog. Enough memory to hold a third of the continent (512 megs).

Want music and weather? The same package, but with XM support in the 376c. All maps on board AND fresh water details for your fishing forays? The 378c - More of a coastal salt water person? The 476c

I like to keep my music separate from my navigator and having a bluetooth speakerphone on board isn't necessary for me, but the 10,00 point (1000-1500 mile) tracklog is, as is the display resolution.

There are as many models out there as you can imagine. Keep your search limited to the major players. Decide what you have to have it do and then buy one of those units that has exactly what you need. Nothing less and nothing more.

I have been using a Garmin Quest for the past year and a half . Use it in the truck and on foot.

Thanks again for the info, this should really help me in my desision. Cota, is that a Montesa Cota TRAILS bike! I had friends in the 70s that had a Motessa Cota 247 and a 123. When I went riding with them on my Yamaha 125MX not YZ they would lose me riding up these crazy ass huge boulders. And a Honda 305 another great ride. I am looking for a 1977 Yamaha RD400. The same bike I had my senior year in High School. I would like to ride to my 30 High School reunion, with twin expansion chambers and all.

If you have the money and do a lot of travel on the bike, I would highly recommend the Garmin 376c with Weather Radar. It is the only unit that can display live doppler weather images overlayed on the GPS screen.

If all you want is a GPS, then look at the 276c. It is one of the best auto-routing units out that has a screen that doesn't wash out in sunlight, which is the achilies heal of most GPS units. There is no GPS made that works as well in sun as the 276 and 376, though some of the newer units are starting to address this.

The new Zumo from Garmin looks interesting but is currently an unknown as no one has one yet, and they are only going to be sold at full retail MSRP and won't be discounted (which is pretty silly if you ask me).

I have a complete review of the 376 you can read if you are interested.

Can you hear me now??

Or, you can do like I did. Wait until another forum member sells one for less than half of new price, jump on it and deal with whatever you get. Something's better than nothing, right? Now, if I could only get the thing away from Eve long enough to mount it on the bike...
