Location
Pendleton OR,
today was a great day for a ride so I washed my bike and headed out for a ride. I was going east on highway 730 and open it up, When the LEO poled me over I was clocked at 86 mph in a 55 mph safety corridor, I'm bad. The LEO did cut me a brake for being my first ticket given me the ticket for 76 mph. $206. I hope my Insurance dose not go up, Anyway I'm feeling guilty and just had to vent.

By safety corridor do you mean a work zone with the two strikes and you lose your license deal?

Safety corridors like the one on Highway 730 between Irrigon and Umatilla. oregon is about six miles long. Its not a work zone but there has been a lot of crashes Over the years, so fines are now doubled. Note; to self, SLOW DOWN

Was it the State Police that got you or was it the Sheriff's Office?
It was the state Police, what was funny was he was driving a jeep so it took about 2 miles to catch me, good thing he understood I was in my zone and just didn't see him.

That's bad luck. There aren't too many State Troopers out that way. So I hear...

Can you do traffic school?
In CA you can pay the fine and take the traffic school and it will not show on the record.

I wish. Got caught 3 weeks ago doing 51 in a 35 zone passing a mustang in my TRUCK by a city cop on a Sunday morning with nobody else around. Pissed me off because I knew he was there (they always are) and had a brain fart. First ticket in 12 years. Always expected it to be on the motorcycle.........wish I could make it go away with some classes.

Correcto-mundo. But there are a couple of wrinkles: you cannot traffic-school-it-away if you had a ticket within the last [i think] 18 months. Also, as I understand, it's county driven. I was popped in SF county and could do traffic school. My buddy could not in Marin. In Contra Costa my son could do his first ticket at traffic school, but as I said, his second he had to pay and couldn't make it go away on his record.

Not sure about OR but in TN and KY you are better off getting nailed by a trooper than you are by the local police on the interstate. The fine is about 50% more for a local cop...I know, have received tickets from both in the same spot, almost identical speed. :(

In NY the state gets a cut (or all of?) of speeding tickets, but not other traffic violations. Its a brilliant system - if a local LEO gives you a speeding ticket you know the local judge is going to want plea the ticket down to something where their township gets all of the revenue. The trick is to only get tickets from the local law enforcement

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Try Quick-And-Easy Traffic School offered on line. It is accepted in CA and only takes about an hour and a half to complete. www.quickandeasytrafficschool.com

Oregon's fine system is set by the state, with only a few exceptions. Local jurisdictions can also add assessments.

Below are the "base fines" (the final fine can be higher or lower, depending on driving record):

Class A Violation- $427 Example would be speeding 31mph+ over the limit

Class B Violation- $242 Example would be speeding 21-30mph over the limit

Class C Violation- $145 Example would be speeding 11-20mph over the limit

Class D Violation- $97 Example would be speeding 1-10mph over the limit

However, in a work/school/or safety zone, those fines "double" (not really double, but close).

Now, here's where it gets fun. If the ticket is written to go to court in a municipal court, 80% of the revenue stays in the municipality while the other 20% goes to the state, regardless of who writes the ticket. If it is written to go in a circuit court, 20% stays in the municipality, and 80% goes to the state.

and 80% goes to the state.
Just to clarify, as some might wonder, when PonyFool says 80% goes to the state on a circuit court appearance/citation, that means the state's general fund, not directly to the Oregon State Police. Of note, the Oregon State Police's budget is about one half of one percent of the state's total general fund...in other words, the Oregon Trooper writing the tix isn't doing it to get his agency any $$. It's written purely out of evilness... ;) (kidding).

Thanks ponyfool, I'm feeling alot better knowing the find is only $206. The LEO gave me a BIG brake for putting me down for 75+ when he had me for 86 mph. that would of been a Class A 31mph+ in a safety zone. That being said, being this is my first ticket in 10 years, do you think it will raze my insurance or would it help here in Oregon to go to a traffic school.

I don't know about traffic school in the rest of Oregon, but in Portland, it will NOT be used in lieu of a conviction. It may be used in lieu of a fine though.

And, FJR Pig is correct, NONE of the money (except assessments which are on top of fines and vary from location to location, and are not allowed in Circuit Court cases) goes directly to law enforcement in Oregon. It does go to a general fund. In some cases though, like this small town in southern Oregon, the city uses the increase in their general fund to pay for more police. That is the exception though, not the rule here.

I do wish the money went to our state police, they have been decimated over the last 20 years.
