I'm prepared to get accosted for this dumb post ...but i've worn out the search engine trying to get my answer.

Yesterday threw on some generic type Hand warmer heating elements ....recalled reading that there is an factory supplied place to tap in somewhere by the left fork, under the storage compartment +/- .....well, I couldn't find this on my 2004, maybe it was right in front of me and I'm D U M (dumb). So I tapped into my accessory wiring that was not far away.

Today I went a searchin' here on the forum and find all references to this factory supplied source relate to gen II bikes.....

So, my question: is there a factory supplied place to tap for heated grips on the 2004??

A prize to whoever can demonstrate to me that I was looking right at it and didn't even know it. ....renojohn

Negative to chassis ground (battery post is best) and positive to a switched lead. You only want power to the grips when the bike is running.

Yamaha grip kit comes with a bag of electrical adapters. On Gen I, power gets teed off of the front brake lever. Ground is hidden in the main electrical harness that runs down the left side of the steering stem (at least in that area). You have to dig for the ground connection.

The Yamaha power controller senses battery voltage and will automatically shut off the heater power if the engine is not running. Your install probably should go though an ignition switched relay with one relay contact connected directly to the battery. You don't want to leave heated grips on when the ignition is off -- like when you run into a store and come back out and find a dead battery.

OK, thanks much!!! all makes sense. My install is fine, went off of my Accessory circuit that I run other stuff from ..it is relayed from the battery with an option to manually switch if i have the need to use with the bike off.

When i was putting the grips on, i *thought* that there was an easy spot to pick up 12VDC which might be easier than what I actually did. (i had read posts refencing this spot to get power ....but in hindsight see they were talking about gen II bikes) ...now I understand.

All is good, thanks much!!! I appreciate your taking the time to set me straight.
