Took my 06 AE in for the ground spider recall. After replacing two wiring harnesses (one they had on hand and one they had to order) and two weeks later

they've told me the windshield motor is shot and will need replacing too. Funny as it worked just fine before it went in. The STEALERSHIP is telling me

that it will cost me about $900.00. I need help from anyone out there who has seen this happen to fight Yamaha on this one.

I think the dealership should be accountable for the failure. Who knows, it might just be hooked up wrong....The part is $475 so if you're handy at all, you might want to DIY this repair.

I do not see any way that the ground spider fix, or anything they could have screwed up installing it, would have caused your windshield motor to fail. And yes, I have seen the recall work instructions. I think that you are victim of pure circumstance.

Are you certain the motor actually failed?

They ordered a new motor and plugged it into my bike and it worked. The idea of pure circumstance crossed my mind too but even the dealer admits it worked pre-harness. The dash quits working when they plug the old motor in too. I can't help but think they screwed up installing the harness somehow and now are trying to get me or corporate to pay for their ****-up. I am curious as to why they had to replace two harnesses-as they put it-instead of just the one as is normal-again as they put it.

If plugging in the motor causes the dash to stop working, then likely something is shorted . . . . not a typical failure mode for a motor.

Common sense says if it worked when you dropped it off and now it doesn't work, they did something to screw it up. I'd be ringing Yamaha Corporate's phone off the hook.

Anybody got the number for Yamaha corporate?

If yo0u are calling corporate, it seems to me that the key points to make se:

1. The only reason it was at the dealer was to get the recall work done - otherwise it would never have been there.

2. The dealer had to perform the recall twice, apparently - no explanation as to why.

3. It worked when it went in, ergo it was something they did to break it - no different than had they scratched up the bike by dropping it - they have to return it in the same condition they got it in. The dealer admitted it worked when they got it and that it doesn't now. So obviously 'they' broke it.

4. The recall was for electrical issues - the motor is an electircal issue - it is 'obviously' something resulting from their messing with the electrics.

5. You shouldn't have to pay for a problem that was created by the service for the recall while the machine was under the care of the dealer.

And if all else fails, with tongue firmly planted in cheek: None of this would have happened if Yamaha had designed the machine properly in the first place

If you do call, don't open with an attitude. You will be catching these people cold and it most likely will take time for them to investigate; they are not omnipotent and aware of everything that happens in every dealership. Be courteous, have all the info in hand, summarized, so you will have the dealer, your motorcycle and the complaint request for help ready when they ask. Should this escalate you want to be seen as having been reasonable and cooperative, not aggressive and combative. Don't expect this issue to be resolved during your first call and be patient.

If you receive a quality questionnaire from Yamaha it will give you an opportunity to give your honest input on how the process at the dealer went. Be honest but don't crucify the dealer until the process of resolution has played out.

Just wanted follow up on the ground spider problem and let everyone know that Yamaha stepped up to the plate and took care of the windshield motor and I'm going to pick up the old beater today. The local service department did a great job of laying it all out for Yamaha and took care of me. I really want to compliment Black Hills Powersports and Jess the service department manager. Never once did I get the runaround-he always told me the truth as to what was going on. If I had any misgivings they were misplaced and I'm sorry for any bad press I might have spread through this forum. Sometimes a guy gets tired of getting jacked around and you just expect it after awhile. Yamaha will always get my business and I hope I don't have to wait much longer for the FJR1400(?). I'll be the first in line.

I mentioned in my previous topic how I was on my way in to pick up the old beater after a fight over the spider causing the windshield motor to blow. Well I got there to pick it up and rode it about half a block before noticing that it ran like hammered s**t. Any time I put any kind of a load at all on it the thing just spits and sputters. Upon asking the service manager if it had been test driven he said he noticed a "slight hesitation" when he rode it. If a slight hesitation means it won't get out of it's own way-then it has a slight hesitation. They knew it all along and just hoped it and me would just go away. Boy does that windshield ever go up and down though!!! What in the ever loving hell is going on here?

Sounds like you could be running on battery only and that it is getting pretty low.

Take a voltmeter and see what the battery voltage is with the engine running.

Did you have a lot of Farkles? . . . you know, things you added that they can blame the problems they caused on?
