I'm thinking about getting one or the other so who has what and why????? Let's keep it on topic and out of the crapper. If you don't have any real useful input STFU. :p

I'd get the AK. I have an SKS. You have to use stripper clips instead of just dropping the mag and replacing it. Plus, it's only a 10 round mag. There are alterations you can make to it but why bother when you can just buy an AK. I bought the SKS cuz I got it for like $50 at a gun show when we used to have them before we became the Peoples Republic of Illinois. It's Chinese made so it's not pretty but it shoots alright. Certainly not a sniper rifle so don't expect any high performance out of it.

I'm sure there are a lot more knowledgeable people here about the AK so they can help. I would think you would want to make sure where it was manufactured, probably will effect quality of build.

I'm willing to bet it's going to tough to keep this thread strictly AK vs. SKS... :p

I tell you what Ray, I will see if I can break down my SKS and bring it down to the RTE if you want. I have a cheep folding stock that I will bring too. You can borrow it as long as you like to get a feel for it. I bought this one brand new when I was 13. The 2 that I've had have been super reliable. Getting a true magazine conversion is pretty inexpensive.

I can't say that you could go wrong with either one.

The SKS is designed after the AK, its only drawback is that is longer than an AK, this would be a disadvantage for close quarter combat however in the field it performs very well. With that said the SKS does come in a shorter version.

A high capacity non detachable magazine is also available for the SKS. Just replace the 10 round mag, no biggie, however as mentioned before it too must be loaded with stripper clips instead of just replacing an empty magazine.

As for the AK, what is there to say, it is one of the finest battle rifles ever made.

If I had to choose one over the other I would with out hesitation go with the AK.

Ray,

I have a SKS, fixed 5 round clip, still in box, packed in cosmoline, bought it before the horrible state of Calif banned the sale of anything semi auto, its just an investment. I also have a Mac 90, removable 5 rd clip, its a basic chinese knockoff of the AK 47, bought a couple of 20 round clips when I was in Idaho, its a real fun gun to shoot, I like the feel of the Mac 90 better, it has a thumbhole and semi pistol grip whereas the SKS is rifle style grip.

Hope this input helps.

Both are cheap, reliable, fairly accurate, etc. I have a Norinco MAK-90 (AK47 clone) that (once I filed down the receiver just a bit 'cause it was hanging on the Russkie surplus hollow points) has been extremely reliable for years. The actions on the SKS and AK47 semi auto clones are extremely reliable. So much so that the Saiga shotties using the same action are very desireable as well.

However if I had to choose between the two... I would give the edge to the AK.

Take a look at a Saiga AK-47 platform. They are made by the same Russian factory that produces the real AK's. They are solid defense/sporting, auto loading, with a 10round mag included. I'm thinking of picking one up and a couple thousand rounds of 7.62 for $200 per. Might be a bury gun, you unner stand!

I have a old SKS, it came with the stock ten round fixed clip and I found a fixed 20 round clip and also have two thirty rounders that I can use with it. It works not my first choice for running the woods with but would do.

Ray,

I used to own an SKS. Bought it for like $60. Sold it for nearly $400 just a couple years later, right before California freaked out, so that guy wanted one bad. I did the magazine mod to it so that it would accept magazines just like an AK, and I think that was around $20. Totally worth the cost. Mine was Chinese made, and word is, the Russian made SKSs are better; although, that is hard to quantify.

What makes the SKS and the AK so dammed reliable is that their tolerances are **** and they are made out of recycled transmission parts from some 1940's era POS Soviet automobile. Those loose tolerances give the actions enough room that you can stuff mud, gravel, grass, casing pieces, or whatever inside, and the rifles will still run. Seriously, you can do almost anything to either rifle, and bullets will still come out of the loud end. A precision rifle will choke on stuff the SKSs and AK47s laugh at.

I have a buddy that competes with an AK47 that has a milled receiver, but that kind of messes with the idea of an AK47. Basically, that milled receiver is now just an AK47 style. If I were you, I'd go with whichever one is cheaper...Probably an SKS. They both have the same operating system and will shoot just about any 7.62x39 ammo on the planet. That stuff used to be about $50 per thousand. It was cheaper than .22 ammo.

You will find some cheap ammo with steel cases and soaked in cosmoline...Don't worry about that, just shoot it.

If you look for them used, look for a smooth action. Don't be alarmed if the bolt moves around a little bit. Make sure it's not excessive. Also, be very sure to look for pitting in the Bolt and around the chamber. A lot of 7.62x39 has corrosive primers, and if the rifle is not cleaned soon after shooting, it can cause problems.

Expect it to be reliable, but be happy with a pretty large group at 100 yards. I wouldn't want to use one for precision shots, but up close, and in the ugly ****, they are the bomb...Which is why so many armies around the world use them.

Either that, or I can hook you up with the best AR15 rifle builder in the country. Have fun with it; whatever you do.

Wasn't going to go there but since HRZ did... This. Love the AR15 platform. The 'best' might be more expensive than you want though. Even a 'good' AR15 (Colt, Spikes, Bravo Company, etc.) will still be a lot more than a SKS or AK.

I already have a ar15 and love it. I just thought I wanted something in 7.62 to fill a spot in the safe. Will probably be the AK or one of the clones like a MAK90.

My SKS has a bayonet attached to the end so you can stab when you run out of rounds. Also, some people don't know this but the SKS rifles have a secret little cleaning kit that pops out of the butt of the stock from a spring-loaded compartment trap door. They're fun shooting guns.

I forgot about the bayonet my SKS had. I also forgot about the cleaing kit in the stock. That was a cool little gun. It killed coyotes like a mo-fo..

If you hooked your thumb in your pocket with your finger on the trigger, you could sort of flutter the sear and make the rifle bump fire. Basically make it go full auto for maybe 6 rounds. It took some practice, but after a while, I could get that rifle to do it almost every try.

DOG FART Canuckistanians don't do guns :p
Nope. They don't use guns. They just use knives and eat their victims. It's scary up there...makes a person actually consider owning a gun.

...say, maybe an AK or an SKS.
