This is to clarify my post of handgun on a bike, I legally own a gun as one of my fundamental rights, I only have it for the protection of myself and my loveones lives, I would never use deadly force for property, money, or my bike thats what insurance is for, file a claim get another one possibly newer model. I have taken basic and advanced handgun courses, tactical shotgun courses and live fire entry, a CCW day and night shoot and shot a few thousand rounds or so. I understand the legal blowback especially if you miss and dont know your background. I dont have a CCW permit but thats not the reason for the post, my concern is legally transporting a handgun from state to state and what would be the transport rules while on a bike (no trunk no glovebox), not looking to necessarilly carry it on my person while riding, but have it while sleeping or in the event of a breakdown at night, I dont want to be in the dark, in the cold, with my shorts down and at the mercy of the elements. (If you don't understand elements than you live in make believe land away from society and will never agree with owning a firearm). This is my first ride of any distance. I am riding alone. Not in a group as some would suggest. I live in the real world not fairytale land and bad things do happen to very, very, very nice people. Someone suggested Mace, if my life is on the line and I spray you in your torso instead of the eyes it could be cancel Christmas for me. That said, I would rather take the life of another and go home to my family, than be found face down somewhere. I know I will have a great time riding for a week I was just pondering wether to bring it or not. WOW!!! SORRY to get everyones blood pressure up, I'll get advice while at the range.

I'm basically on the same page as you, but to answer your question, laws vary from state to state (so that is what you are up against). Other than supporting your position you'll have to deal with your particular conditions as they pertain to your locations.

Very generally speaking, an unloaded firearm in one saddle bag, with ammo in the other, would be the most likely scenario to avoid problems if things were discovered by LEO types. The CCW permits required to legally have it on your person take some time, and depending on the states you need, some travel and expense. Not a bad thing to consider if you wish to do this on a regular basis. Just gives you more options.

Don't think you got everyones blood pressure up . Just a good healthy discussion..

As always CHECK a good source like the NRA or a state to state carry / transport law site..

But, "usually" if you carry the firearm unloaded in a locked compartment that you can not get to, without exiting the vehicle ,,

such as the trunk of a car ,,You are OK .. I'm assuming that locked in the hard bags of the FJR would be the same thing..

I think there was a federal law that ,,, IF you are legal with the firearm at point A and are traveling to point B ,, which is also legal

for you to have the firearm ,,, then transporting the unloaded firearm in a locked car trunk was OK...

But please check it out to make sure,,, laws change from state to state ,, town to town ,, etc...

Have a safe ,,, and fun trip ... old & slow Dan <<<

I do understand that you do not have a permit or license depending on your states definition. www.carryconcealed.net is a good reference for your question. Just enter where you are coming from and where you are going, and it will give you the information you need. I have used this on many occasions and have found it very helpful.

In general:

Federal Firearms Transportation Statute

The federal firearms transportation statute basically states that you are allowed to transport a legally owned firearm through any state as long as you meet the following requirements.

1. Your weapon is kept unloaded and stored in a separate compartment not readily accessible by either the driver or passengers.

2. Any ammunition is kept separate from location of firearms and is also not readily accessible by either the driver or passengers.

If there is not a separate compartment available in the vehicle then the firearm must be kept in a locked container and stored somewhere other than the glove box or console.

Screw the law, screw ANY regulations that concern my ability to defend my life. I carry my .38 snub nose, bobbed hammer revolver in my tank bag. Loaded. I'll deal with any ramifications of the legality or lack of if and when the time comes. No one can legislate my ability to defend my very life.
