I picked up my new FJR today. Had my first ride today even though it was 44 degrees Celsius. Only a short ride but I am very happy with the bike.

Is it possible to bring the bars closer to the rider. I understand there is an adjustment.

Does anyone have any idea how this is done.

Typically from the factory they are set to "middle position" out of 3 possible positions - so you can move them closer. It is easy - you need to remove small cover (on each bar) and to loosen nut what hold the bar. Than there are pins and holes you need to reposition and fix the nut again.

If it's the same as the Gen II, do both sides together, you can't do one side on its own.

Super easy to do, takes about 10 minutes. Your dealer will probably be happy to copy the couple of pages from the service manual to show you how, they're probably posted on this forum somewhere too.

So does moving them closer change the angle of the bars, or just put them closer to you. I would love the bars a bit closer, but thought they may also change the angle.

Here's the ONE place I'm going to have to disagree with mcatrophy. While you shouldn't do it, you techically "CAN" do it. One of us might have done it that way on accident and it went that way till someone pointed it out.

You don't need the Service Manual. It's actually described in the owner's manual.
What year did they put that in? My 2007 says on page 3-21...

The handlebars can be adjusted to one of three positions to suit the riders preference. have a Yamaha dealer adjust the position of the handlebars.
Didn't stop me from moving them on my own though.

Just out of curiosity, is this your 1st FJR? If so, what bike, if any, did you come from? The only reason I ask, is you may want to put some more miles on and let yourself adapt to the bike before you change anything. I came to my FJR from a VTX and put 500 miles on it before I got home. That ride made my shoulders and back sore from the new position. Once I got adjusted, I've never had to add or change anything...

Anyway, just a thought.

I Had a Goldwing before. It's a good point. I will do a few more k's before I adjust them.

I had a look at the adjustment and it looks quite simple. However, it appeared that the cables were too tight to allow any movement of the bars?

They should move forward that small bit. I did mine almost immediately when I got mine, but then I happen to know that I'm short and have short arms. I've been very happy with moving the bars on my previous bikes so it was a no brainer when I saw the adjustment was available for the FJR for me to move forward with it.

One thing though that has come up a few times, and I found myself, is that on the FJR, for some odd reason, it makes you want to slump forward. Focus on sitting up and straighten out your back. Good posture goes a long way toward comfort of the ergonomics of this bike.

There is enough slack in the cables & wires for all 3 positions. I had to cut off the zip tie on the wire bundle to move the bars back to the close position. Moving them back does change both the angle and height and the closeness but only slightly. It is easy to do. After removing the little cover, loosen but do remove the screw and nut on both bars. There is a small plate under the top triple crown that holds the nuts for these screws and nuts captive and you have to loosen both bars so this plate can slide around. Both bars can then be lifted & slid around to the three positions. Once you get them loose, you will see how it works. After you get through (it takes 5 minutes) check to see that the dealer did put Locktite on the side case lock screws. You did read the “13-Up Bin-O-Facts” in the FAQs didn’t you! Later,,,De

Ok, I should have said:

"it's easier to do both together, there's a common plate that needs to move both ends and it binds if you try to do one side at a time".

"Can't" was so much quicker to type
