Does anyone near the Portland, OR area have an aftermarket seat - or we could do a get together to compare several? :)

(wasn't sure if maybe I should have put this in the ride planning area to increase chances of people in my local area actually reading it, but it really is about an accessory)

I know there are lots of threads on which ones people like, etc. but I really want to touch one before I decide if any of them are worth plunking $$s down for. I think I might be interested in a Russell Day Long, Bill Mayer, maybe a Sergeant? Heck I don't know what I want, so anything could be good.

I have a Russell Day Long with the heavyweight option. My schedule is rather open at the moment due to temp lay off. Pick a spot, time and day and people will come.

I have a friend with a Rich's seat that I might be able to drag along if it's evening or weekend. Rich's is in Olympia, (was in Seattle).

Actually he's in Kingston.

BrettB, if you're still looking, I have a Rich's seat you're welcome to look at. FWIW, I highly recommend doing a ride in with whomever you choose. After going through Rich's process with my seat, I don't see how someone can get a truly custom made seat through the mail.

+1 on Rich O'Connor, and the advice about doing a ride-in fitting.

If you can come up to the PNW tech meet 10/24 here in Auburn, WA (about 2.5 hours north) you will get a chance to see and sit on many different custom seats all in one location. Also will get to meet many of the riders in the area. There is several coming up from the Portland area.

I met the guy when my FJR was still being broken in. I rode up to Albany for something or other at a bike parts shop. Told me the first thing he did to a new bike was take it on a lawn and drop it. That way he got the anxiety of the first scratch out of the way. Said he made custom seats and told me my stock seat was too wide in front and too narrow 'ahem' in back. Interesting and friendly guy. I took his card and carried it in my wallet a long time, but never followed up.

I've got a Russell Day-Long two-up with backrest. I live in Vancouver near the mall. PM me if you want to take a look at it or ride it on your bike.

...kind of pondering seats as well. A Sargent (better than stock but not custom built) can be had for $650 or so and you keep your stock seat.

What are people paying for the custom / high end saddles???? I'm not too far from Riches so that would be convenient.

My seat from Rich's was less than that, just a bit over $500. So for less than a Sargent, you can get a seat custom fitted, gel insert, leather cover, color matched stitching.

On the Friday I was there, he had about ten bikes he and his staff of six or so were working on, and Rich was a bit perturbed he'd been 'overbooked.' But he gave everyone his attention and ensured everyone left completely satisfied. This was about a six hour event due to all the customers that day. In fact, it took a few extra fits to get my seat exactly the way I wanted it but it was not a problem.

The next week I put over 2700 miles on the new seat and it was worth every $.
