A Soldier

He is that fallen lance that lies as hurled,

That lies unlifted now, come dew, come rust,

But still lies pointed as it plowed the dust.

If we who sight along it round the world,

See nothing worthy to have been its mark,

It is because like men we look too near,

Forgetting that as fitted to the sphere,

Our missiles always make too short an arc.

They fall, they rip the grass, they intersect

The curve of earth, and striking, break their own;

They make us cringe for metal-point on stone.

But this we know, the obstacle that checked

And tripped the body, shot the spirit on

Further than target ever showed or shone.

This morning at around 10 I geared up and rode to town. It was a blustery 30 degrees this am, but a few others showed up. Overall there was a maybe a thousand people there, not bad for a small town.

The hardest part about this is the younger vets. I don't mind seeing the old coots like myself. But when you realize there are younger guys that weren't there before. Guys from Desert Storm and now from Iraq and Afganistan are now there. My hope is someday there will be no need for this type of celebration.

Today I set aside all my lesson plans to teach my students a little about Veteran's Day. We learned that it all began with the signing of the Armistice that ended WW1 on On the 11th hour of 11/11/1918. This day was celebrated as "Armistice Day" afterwards. Then in 1954, Congress changed the name to Veteran's Day.

I copied a few comments, spelling and grammatical errors included directly from several papers: One 7th grade girl wrote: "Veteran's Day is important to honor because soldires risk there lives everyday to protect their conutnry. Some event die for there country." Another young lady wrote, "Because it is nice to honor thoose who served for you and helped you country..." One of my boys wrote, "It is important to honer the vererans because they fight for over courtries. The make us free. We have freedom. We are safe because of the veterans." I had several papers with these exact words as the students were working together in groups to formulate their answers to the question I asked them: "Why should we honor our veterans?"

Thanks to all the Veterans for their service.

This year I also want to thank these Vets who I give a great deal of credit for getting me through a tour of duty in Vietnam and sending me home with no holes in me.
