I always wore a helmet when I rode, not because of Harry Hurt, but because my friend's older brother said you needed a helmet (Bell-back in 77) and a leather jacket - which was the "bomber style" back then. Good advice for an 18 year old.

I heard of the Hurt report when it was linked on one of the FJR boards. Good work by a good man.

RIP :(

Ah ****. One of the good guys.

Thanks for the years of research and recommendations.

Fellow Texan he was; that I did not know. Certianly know of his work and namesake.

Condolences and high Salute for his contribution to the motorcyling safety industry...we have all benefitted from his work.

SALUTE!

Among the (Hurt Report's) major findings were that...two-thirds of motorcycle crashes involved cars and two-thirds of those accidents occurred when a car driver failed to see the motorcycle and violated the cyclist's right of way.
"Right of way" only applies when you have a bigger vehicle than the ones that may violate it. If you act like you are entitled to a right-of-way on your motorcycle, you are relying on "Pure *** Luck". JMHO, YMMV.

:rip_1: :bye2:

I hope to some day, many years from now, die of something not related to riding, and I'd settle for 81 in a heartbeat....

Sure, but the report is trying to make the point that the car was in the wrong, that it wasn't the biker doing something stupid, and that car drivers are blind ignorant fucktards. As opposed to something like "the bike passed on a double yellow in a blind corner" where it's "yeah, he deserved a smackin' already"

I still can't believe he's dead and they haven't yet done another study. They're "fixin' to get ready to do one" but I'll believe it when I see it.

He did some awesome work. I commented on another post here, when I saw him. He came out with other USC researches to do the data collection on an accident in my neighborhood in the late 70's. I was fortunate to see his findings at work on a video they did in the early 80's.

To this day, seeing that video made a lasting impression on me about helmets and safety.

RIP

His work saved my hide more than once. I am probably still here because of his research. RIP old timer. We loved and respected you.

RIP, Dr. Hurt. Your research and its publication are likely the reason I'm still above ground. From the first time I read a synopsis of your conclusions, I've approached every intersection and car entering a roadway with an eye toward my escape route.

RIP Mr. Hurt. Here's hoping for more like him picking up the reigns.

In response to Toecutters "Right of Way" comment. I always explain it to my students as

"Right of Weigh"

+1! Godspeed Harry...we all owe you a debt of gratitude. Rest in peace.

Having read all David Hough's books and several others, many authors use data compiled by Dr. Hurt and his team to help us all understand motorcycle safety and learn ways to minimize our risk and exposure.

Thank You Dr. Hurt. My sympathies to the Hurt family.
