It's snowed every week all winter long in the North Carolina highlands near my place so between the ice, snow, sand, salt and grit it hasn't been worth going up there. But, glory be!... this weekend we saw temps climb to the 60s! HaulinAshe's wife Teri said enough is enough...we're going for a motorcycle ride...or else! Well, the thing is, it snowed in the highlands, yet again, just 3 days prior and 2 days of warmer temps aren't going to clean up a winter's load of mess. What to do?

With Teri's command for bikes bearing down I came up with a loop from my place to Mt Airy that only went to 3000' and that was along NC-18 so the road should be OK even with the salt. Wouldn't you know it - we had a fantastic time and after a long (for these parts) winter it feels like mole people coming out of the ground.

We mostly stayed in the foothills, farm country. Kinda stark but still scenic in its own way.

Lunch was at the Gondola Restaurant in Mt Airy. Italian restaurants are funny things. You never know where you're going to find a good one and they can be in the most unlikely places. The Gondola understands that our favorite Italian is peasant food. We like it tasty and plentiful!

Chicken parmesan. Yummy.

You know what's coming next... No ride report is complete without a boring *** video and this is no exception. Here's a 1 1/2 minute clip (a small torture) of us climbing Brushy Mountain south of Wilkesboro. The "mountain" is only 2000' so the road was in good condition.

A good time! It's raining in the highlands today and is forecast to rain all next weekend through Monday. Maybe, just maybe, there won't be another big snow up there and the roads will get cleaned of crap.

Excellent! And good to see the Ashster up and about. Haven't heard nor seen anything from that boy in forever!

Oh, and the Google Map of your route sure makes it look like a dull one.

How time & people get away from ya'... I didn't know that Jeff had gotten married. Last I knew, he was dating Karen.

Glad to see that ya'll had a good time, Lee.

Nice post!

I like very the mounting location of your Go pro!!

Thanks for sharing!

The HaulinAshe's are up to their necks in new jobs, classes and trying to find a house versus the speculators that are buying everything the minute it hits the market. Way little free time.

Seems Teri must be a good / healthy influence on the Jeff-ster. He's looking pretty darned svelte these days.

Or maybe it;s just the black shirt. Black makes everyone look thinner, right?

And Lee, I believe that you have mastered the ride report video format; Short, sweet road, and competent riders. Not lame at all, IMNSHO. And I may very well be the most overly critical guy out there on video lameness. Just ask anyone.

Lee - thanks for taking one for the team and scouting for clear roads. Soon, it will be time for EOM route recon - and you won't sucker me into that 500 mile "joke" again either...

C'mon down for an EOM route recon weekend! I'm thinking mid May before the Memorial Day <> Labor Day Maggie Valley tourist madness season.

Yes - I need to confirm some details and pick a weekend.

I forgot to mention - there is no better therapy or medication for the winter cabin fever illness than the motor and gear whine of the FJR.

I especially like 6k to 8.5k coming out of that fantastic curve with those incredibly sticky tires you just picked up before the trip...

I love it! I may have to copy the GoPro mount location.

It's a good POV and location to attach remote power, so the camera is always on without killing battery and attach remote mic taped to the tank to record engine sound without wind noise. Video start and stop is with the remote wifi switch attached to my wrist so no fussing with the camera. The only thing I have to mess with for a day ride is recharge the remote wifi switch from bike battery during lunch.

Nice Ride Report - the G/P selection was fantastic. I especially liked the mic location - and your comments therein.

When I'm ripping it at the mountain twisties, I enjoy it twice as much going up hill as down hill - more confidence that way and who doesn't like to keep the bike up in the power band for a bit?

But IMO regardless, you haven't done it until you've done it on a big VFR with gear driven cams and a really throaty can. Wouldn't trade my FJR for nothing, but there's something about the twisties on a Viffer.

Good stuff, man. I feel like taking off right now. But I'll have to wait 2 more months for my next Smokey adventure.
