Heated grips and Vista cruise

I have the factory heated grip on my 2005 and want to install a vista cruise. It looks like I will somehow have to make a bit more room for the vista to fit between the grip and the housing but I am wary of removing the grip. I used to simply fire up the compressor and shoot some air between the grip and the throttle tube but will this damage the heating element? How should I loosen/remove the grip so I can get the clearance needed?
