Startin' to get a little nipply here in Florida (low 40's this morning)...must be time to deploy the "Heater Flaps".

Sure wish they opened up with the touch of a button...

I ride a Gen-I. Don't need no stinking vents! :p

Actually, I'm about to put my bigger windshield on, and remove the tank blanket, just so I can get some of that heat, and better protection from the breeze.

Here in the frigid north of Florida it's been under 32 twice so far. Then wramer this weekend, but dropped again last night. Was right on 32 this morning!

I havent figured out (yet) how to adjust the vents :(
1. Find a nickel.

2. Turn the 2 dzus fastners ccw, remove each 'screw'.

3. Gently pull flap 'away' from bike until holes align with outer female 'holes'.

4. Insert dzus fastners.

EzPeazy!

Good luck.

lol thanks. I would've figured out eventually heh. Im assuming these screws are in the cowling...bah I'll find em :)

So, how effective are these flaps? Will I over cook myself when the temps get above 70 as it often does here in Phoenix (even in winter)? We often ride to the higher elevations where temps are in the 30s but always return to Phoenix.

They are so effective that people can't agree about which position is for what.

And this thread should soon be reclassified to the NEPRT, aka the "DRD"

Well, in the spirit of some Myth-Busters style science, I tried them last July, and it was a hell of a lot warmer with them open/extended. However, with the engine temp at only 3 or 4 bars, you can't tell much difference. I had to blank off half my radiator to raise the engine temperature back to normal, and then it did help quite a bit.

For my radiator, I used some of that corrugated plastic signage kindly donated by the local Winn-Dixie manager. I removed them about 30 seconds after he walked away from sticking them in the ground. :)

All they do is restrict ambient air to the rider's legs when the bike is moving.

So, if the weather is very hot, it may pay to have them out to reduce the heating effect of the ambient air on the legs.

If the weather is very cold, having them out will reduce the cooling effect of the ambient air.

That's it. They have virtually no effect on the engine heat getting to the rider, nor can they help when the bike is stationary.

Personally, I've never had mine out, but then we don't often get the extremes of temperatures other areas get. Except the past week or so, when we've been having temperatures down to -15C (5F), my road is covered in ice. I don't "do" ice, so I can't ride at all

.

But even when I've been out in around freezing temperatures I've not used them. They look so ugly

when they're out.

Couple of piccies (ok, I can't count) (click on image for larger view)

The last shows the two positions for the screws (picture was taken to show how to ease the "hinge" to remove the wing altogether).

+100 to that! That's basically why I don't use them myself. The v-strom hand guards are seriously ugly too, but at least they work really well.

I've found with them out, and the windshield up, to create a pocket of warmer air to ride in up to 60-65 mph around the waist area.

From my experimentation in temps from 25 to 105 degrees I have found that I like them out in the winter and closed in the summer. I haven't noticed any difference in engine heat but with them out I get less wind on my legs.
