Any suggestions on places I just gotta stop to see from Mooreville WV s to Monterey VA?

Thanks.
If you might be looking for a technical (in parts) & scenic road I can make a suggestion! Howards Lick Rd. It's near Moorefield.

Also, there is a place... my friend, Jeff describes it as the "top of the world"... There's a ranger station & you can ride up to it and see in every direction for miles. It might be Spruce Bald or something like that... let me check into it... but I do know of Howards Lick... that'll take you thru Lost River State Park & into WV near Moorefield. Pavement is ok... definitely not perfect... I give it a "C". But boy, whatta' ride! Gary can run this down with you... or I'll jump back up at lunchtime & give a word or two.

Heidi,

just looked it up - you're right, SW of Mooresville - I'll try it out!

Thanks.

BTW, making reservation for the 14/15th right now.

Let me look up that Bald I was talking about. I haven't been up there yet, but it sounds magnificent!

Edited to say: Boy, I was way off on the name of that Bald... it's Reddish Knob. Google it and you can see where it is. All paved roads to it, too.

Jim,

That looks pretty much like the ride we took in June. Heidi's suggestions sound good. I'm at work now and don't have a WV map with me. Enjoy. See 'ya on the 14th

You's gonna' have fun mister! I wish I were a little closer. I'd love to ride out there with you. I'm a little too far from the mountains for a day trip, though. It's not impossible, mind you... just not as enjoyable as a 2 day trip. I'd have about 450 miles just going to and from... not counting play time. I'll see you on the 14th. Has Lorie decided to come with, or not?

So far Lorie is in. I think she may drive to JMU and drop off the car and join me at that point. If we meet at Waynesboro (vicinity) that won't be that far.

Good deal! I'll be seeing you guys in Waynesboro, eh? Are you aware of where the meeting spot is for the 14th?

Jim,

Please excuse the thread hijack. If your trip is still dual purpose w/ regard to fly fishing; may I suggest the head of the South Br. of Potomac at the Big Bend National Recreation area (paved) between Petersburg and Seneca Rocks on 220S. Also Seneca Creek (gravel but short hike to good fishing) off of 28 south of Seneca Rocks. Great small mouth float fishing (fly or otherwise) through "the trough" on South Branch near Moorefield. WV used to offer a very reasonable non-resident 3 day fishing license and likely still do. Just Google WVDNR and can purchase online and print your own, or you can purchase locally once you check it out. A word of caution though, once you fish it the trout won't be the only ones hooked!!!! Enjoy,

Jim

Heidi - 1100 Sat Am at a gas station ya'll met at before - I didn't meet you there so no, I don't know where to meet ya.

Jim - yup. This is a "recon" trip for future fly fishing trip(s). Guy I work with fished near the Hermitage (Hot Springs) and I'm going to check out that place. I'll map out where you suggest and stop and take a look.

Thanks - nothing like a "local" view into good fishing spots.

Ok, Jim... the gas station... right where 250, 64, Blue Ridge & Skyline meet there is a rest area. More precisely where the "actual" meeting of the BRP & Skyline Drive occur... right were the BRP ends and Skyline begins, there is a rest area that's not very scenic. At that rest area you can see an exit ramp. (not the one onto 64) Take that exit ramp towards 250. There is a gas station/info center at the bottom & a direct route to 250W. Not sure how to explain it other than that. You'll see it when you're there... promise. Anyone, can you explain it better, please do.

If I can confuse you further, please write.

That's a good description Heidi. The only thing I could add is that its Exit 99 off I-64

Ahhh, the exit #! Who would ever need that!!!! Hahahaha! THanks very much!

I need a 10 place WGS84 grid - with altitude! I'll find it, thanks.

Made my ride today. It "partly cloudy" on my for the first 120 miles or so - up until Morresville (?) WV. Had a message from my wife that our daughter was having one of those roommate trouble episodes and I had to get to JMU. So, I headed down 220 to 33 to Harrisonburg. 220/33 both great roads. 220 with the higher speed sweepers and 33 with some of the same, but included are the tight slow speed turns going up/down the mountain. 350 (actually 349.3) mile day. Rode with the Hella FF50 for the first time. I have them hooked to the high beam wire. Gotta say, they don't meet what I think of as "driving lights." That is they aren't a focused long range beam - more of closer in "fill-in" lights. I'll probably hook them up to a hot line so I can use them with hi or low beams. All said, glad I got them.

Edit - for my brothers and sisters out there, I passed this on Rt 55 just west of Delplane (sp) VA.
