I am installing Hella FF200 and my hid low beams only. I am trying to place ballasts and am not finding much extra space. I need to know if heat is a problem with the ballasts I am looking at putting one Hella ballast and one hid ballast stacked on top of each other in the nose cowl just above the left headlite.

Will this be ok?

I can't say definitely, but that's what I'm planning to do myself. I have one FF200 ballast in the left nose above the headlight and the other ballast behind the battery. I was planning to add the HID ballasts to the left nose position.

It seems logical to me. I would think the nose would allow some ram air movement.

An alternative FF200 ballast location is one each by the turn signals between upper and lower fairing. Doug Chapman swears they'll fit if fiddles with enough. That would leave plenty of room and reduce heat build-up even further.

It might be the way I end up trying....we'll see.

BTW, me thinks the '06 folks with air vents are going to have even less space to work with than us '05 and earlier. It will be interesting to see how HID ballasts can be arranged in them.

No FF200s here. I do have HID hi-lo headlamps. One balast above the left headlamp, one between the headlamps and the controller under the center mounted ballast. I am running HID modified PIAA 910s. The balasts are installed, one in each side upper fairing. Twiddeling is required on the right side to clear the battery. Heat has not been a problem with any part of the installation.

Thanks for the help. All installed last weekend and works great. Have not been able to test ride yet as it aws 20 deg here in st, louis this past weekend.

I have one hid ow beem ballast mounted to the right of headlites and ond low beam ballast and one hid ff200 ballast in the left side. The other Hella ballast in the right fairing by battery. Thought I was going to need crobar to get things back together but with alot of trial and much error it is together and ready for my run to jacksonville in a couple of weeks.

Thanks to Warchild and Ignacio for all the tech info for this install.

If you put the ballast behind the battery close to the knee--were you able to get the tupperware realigned? I admit I have this 1/8" bulge that's close.....but not perfect.

I actually put it nxet to the battery but up close to the front I put some foam in there so it didnt bounce against the plastic I took the plastic on and off about ten times to get it right but I also have slight bulge to work with.

I have installed Hi-Lo HID's for headlights. Also modified my PIAA 90's th HID. Yes balasts are a problem. With the hi-lo set up there is also a controller. I've ended up setting one balast over the left head lamp, the other balast is between the head lamp housings and the controller is under the web between the housings. The HID balasts for the PIAA's are mounted on the sholder of the fairing uppers, L & R, just aft of the mirror support point.

No one said this would be easy. Time and patience are required. DON'T CUT ANYTHING UNTIL YOU ARE CERTAIN!! Been there done that.
