I FINALLY got around to putting the new suspenders on the bike last weekend. The Wilbers (shock and fork springs) are every thing I hoped for. At least insofar as I have been able to ride. When I went to remove the front axel pinch bolt I found it not there. Gone. I know it was there in Feb when the Wilbers came in 'cuz I went over what I was going to need for the job and clearly remember looking at it. I guess I should have put a wrench on it and tightened it for the hell of it. I didn't and now it is gone. To make it more interesting, the local yami shop doesn't have one in stock (pt # 4SV-23156-00-00) and can't tell me the shaft size and thread pitch so that I can look for a local solution.

Can anyone help here? Someone in the DFW area got a spare? Didn't think so. Can some one here tell me the proper size so that I can go looking for a replacement? I really want to ride and I am really not comfortable with riding without that pinch bolt.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Headed out to my bike in the parking lot and try out a new set of hex wrenches. It took a 6mm wrench to loosen it. I can't tell the thread pitch, but it looks standard to me...kinda like the fasteners on the handlebars. It's 40mm long (measured from tip of bolt to shoulder).

I would think going to your fastener place and asking for a 6mm x 40mm stainless steel hex would be more than enough. If they have choices of pitch I'd ask if one is more standard than another...or just get one of each.

Edit: Found out after others answered that the wrench size is not the size of the bolt. I learned something that the measuring of the outside of the threads is the method. Left posting intact to show my learning experience (aka ignorance)

For the money and strength getting a grade 8.8 bolt close in size and if doesn't fit tapping it is no big deal and the new bolt will be tons stronger than the oem junk...

If 6mm is the same as my dirt bike and I do believe it is there is 2 threads.

If I was at the store I could tell you which one but off hand I can't think of what they are but do believe 6 has 2.

Heck for the price grab both :D

I'll be home in about 1 1/2 hours and was planning on doing my springs tonight, if you don't have an aswer by then I can give you the exact pitch.

For God's sake, just don't ask for any info that might be in a shop manual you don't own.

This forum is only for questions from folks who own a manual.

:******: and PROUD of it.

Most probably an 8mm X 40mm with 1.25 pitch. Make sure the Shank of the bolt does not bottom out on the threads. I'll check for you to make sure. BRB

Update: Yep, 8x40x1.25. Guess what, I even have one that's 12.5 grade and chrome! If you want it it's yours, or you can pick one up at ACE Hareware. Let me know.

Here's a helpful tip: Ignore RadioHowie. His ****** hurts right now.

Here's another one: Whenever you need to know the info on a bolt on your FJR, go to Yammie's website and go to the part's catalog, HERE. Lookup the bolt and question get it's part number. The part number will give the bolt diameter and length info.

For instance, the part number for the bolt in question is 91314-08040-00. So as RTSR1/FJR said, it's an 8mm X 40mm. Guess that doesn't give you the pitch though.

For God's sake, just don't ask for any info that might be in a shop manual you don't own.

Does stealing a manual off eBay count as owning it....even if one accepts the kharma ramifications?

, or so I've read.

Well, with the one exception, thanks to all for the help. Especially Skoot for the link to the part numbers and to RTSR1/FJR for the offer, though Florida is kinda far away for a bolt.

For the record, I do in fact, own a factory manual that I purchased from the local Yamaha dealer. For the colossal ****** who suggested otherwise, please show me where in that manual the part number or size of that bolt appears. I don't seem to be able to find that info there, and I noticed that not one of those who actually were trying to be helpful appeared to have gotten the info from said manual.

THPWE

On a side note, does it really matter if the bolt is of a higher grade steel? While looking locally for something like that bolt I am unable to find that in 8 or better grade. I may have to get something less strong locally so I can ride now and wait till I can get to the metroplex or order something online for the better grade bolt. Note that the manual only calls for 17 ft/lbs of torque for that application.

Parts catalog bookmarked for future ref.

and I just can't leave it unsaid. The result of the union between two gay cowBOYs could never be more than a pile of ****.

B)

( no suggestion that the above statement has anything at all to do with any forum admin. No (or at least not many) small animals were harmed in the creation of this post)

edit: A quick look at the parts catalog shows that the local parts kid gave me the part number for the oil seal clip. cheese louise. Gonna have to give him a hard time about that.

I used Ignacio number 6 because he said it but in fact my wr250 is the exact same 8x40x1.25. I broke 1 bolt after only having the front wheel off twice. I use a torque wrench and the triple tree bolts are the same and they all clicked. The axle pinch bolts 3 of them just kept turning and turning. The bolts all were twisting in the middle even without ever reaching 17ft/lb. It is a known problem on thumpertalk. The stronger 8 metric bolts that I replaced them with all torqued down instantly and properly. The regular bolts are just cheap junk, can you say lowest bidder. :D

I only could find the strong 8.8 at Lowes, Home Depot does not carry this grade in Metric. A local hardware store might carry them but Lowes definitely does. In my opinion they are definitely worth the trouble because believe me if you ever break one and have to drill it and use a easy out you will wish you did.. Just my 2 cents cheap insurance :D :D :D

Thanks sparky, will check lowes (brand new one here in Weatherford) during lunch.

Twisted off bolts at less than 17 ft/lbs? those would be some seriously cheap crap. Yeow.

Yea, I set it to 16 ft/lb's and it would click, 17 it would just spin and twist. CRAP!

Laying your your back drilling next to the brake rotor and trying to get a broken bolt out is no fun and shouldn't have happened.

Note, the bolts you find most likely will not have the small 6mm head, they will be bigger and won't have the built in washer like look. They are just regular bolts and I put washers under them, worked fine.

I know for a fact ACE Hardware has them! They're in the Chrome fastener section. Head is even marked 12.5 for grade. If they don't and you can't find one, and if you want it, I'll mail it to you at N/C. I can even over night it, but that's gonna cost ya! :D

Once again, thanks RTSR1/FJR. Your generosity is appreciated. Fortunatly I followed sparkys advice and Lowes had just the thing. The bins didn't make it clear about the bolt grade but I found the very last 8 mm X 40 mm 1.25 pitch bolt (cheese, I hope that is right) and stamped on it's head is a 12.5. I may get some saddle time on the new Wilbers tonight. Thanks Sparky! :yahoo:
