trouble shooting well???

Hey I have a well with a deepwell pump surface mount not submersible.

I am thinking maybe the pressage switch might have got zapped during the storm last night...

anyway got to use about enough water this morning to get lathered up then had to use 2 ; 2 litre bottles of water to rinse off with, after a few moments water again, to fill up bottles and give animals water but then stopped again... will check when i get home but anyone know what might be the culprit or other things to check???????

Thank sMIke

Do you have an inline filter on this system? If so, then it may be clogged or restricted. Sometimes, the storms will shake some sediment lose into your well and choke the piss out of your filter.

The pressure switch should have a guage. Watch the guage while someone uses the water. You will be able to see the pressure at cut-off.

And check the switch contacts for ants. I don't know why they like those contacts, but they do. Will kill your power distribution.

Yes, TWN, I have a well. This one was professionally drilled. I DUG my first one with a shovel.

Wells are good, just so long they are not located close to a fishing sinker manufacturer or near your septic system. Apparently, yours is!

:bleh:

Mike, It sounds as if you may have just lost the prime on the pump in which case it is probably a bad check/foot valve. Does it sound as if the pump is cavitating? If it was a dirty filter cartridge or such as SCAB suggested, there would generally be a consistent pressure drop and not usually intermittent water like you are experiencing but you should check and replace that anyway if you have one. How old is the pump/well and do you have mineral problems? Was it a problem that got progressively worse or did it happen all at once? If the well is more than 13-15 years old, it could be that your well point has finally **** the bed...If push comes to shove you can run a line from your neighbors (the ones you don't like) and just hook it into your outside faucet until you get it rectified. Let us know how you make out.

Ok, here goes. I used to sell these things so I'll try to help. Good tips on the water filter and check/foot valve.

You should be able to get the pump running and watch the pressure gauge to see what is going on. If you open a valve near the pump to drain it down, the pump should come on around 30 lbs and shut off at 50. Some are set to go 20 to 40 but always with a 20 lb range with valve closed. When it shuts off there should be no leakdown unless a faucet is open. If there IS leakdown, I would suspect the foot valve way down in the well is not holding the pressure above it. I fixed that problem once by installing a check valve just before the pump, a lot easier since you don't want to pull all the pipe up from the well, do you?

Your tank is probably the pressurized bladder type with a "tire valve" on top? Like tires, they do loose pressure after a long time. You can add or remove air thru this air valve. The tank pressure should be 1 to 2 lbs less than the turn-on setting of the pressure switch (30 to 50, tank pressure should be 28 lbs).

If you remove the cover on the pressure switch (don't get zapped, be careful!!!!!), you'll see 2 adjusting nuts over springs. Don't mess with the small one, it controls the differential (30 to 50, 30 to 52, etc). the longer adjuster controls the range (30 to 50, 32 to 52, etc). You can fine tune to exactly 30 to 50...tightening will raise the range, loosening will lower the range. I suggest 30 to 50.

None of these thing go bad very often but they can be out of adjustment. A check valve only costs around $12. Take a measurement of the pipe size used in your system if you need to get a check valve. You will prolly need nylon or plastic fittings or adapters and stainless steel clamps to make it fit up to the pump.

If its a real old system, remove the little tube that runs from the pressure switch to the pump to make sure the recess isn't all crapped up with corrosion. Like on mine, it will prevent your switch from working. And if its real old you might want to just replace the pump, not that expensive. Also, wells have been known to go dry.

Hope this helps, let me know. PM if still having problems.

Charlie

If its a thermally protected motor the pump could be binding and the motor will overheat and shut off then start back up after cooling off.

Charlie took care of you...

I was going to say, check/foot valve, then pressure switch, and prime too... But it's covered.

Well, if this happened right after an electrical storm I'd add to the above suggestions by saying check the fuses or circuit breakers. You may have lost one leg to the pump (one side of a 220V circuit). I hate to say it, but this really sounds like one of the things Charlie said, wells have been known to run dry. Has there been any new construction or other new wells drilled in your neighborhood? Have you had an unusual period of little or no rain?

well i sure do appreciate all of the tips, etc. one of my neighbors lost theirs too after the storm...

it appears that a message from above was sent and i was sruck out on my bike in all of the mess. so i was not home to recieve it,but the message split my 150ft plus pine/spruce tree from top to bottom, fried my well pump blow my driveway post lights up,basically blowing the bulbs out of the sockets and they flew out of the post lights,by breaking the glass while exiting,,mr garage door open will not close unless you hold the manual button in... the guy next to me was sitting on his porch and said my yard glowed red/rose color.

so i guess i was lucky to be caught in this past thursdays hail storm......

so now this is an insutance claim, by the way, my back tire is flat .. so with all the debris on the roads, ithink i hit something....damit......

btw i replaced the pressure switch no worky...

motor stays hot so breaker is off and ill have no water for a few....

i need to go ride my bicycle now....
