So I just wrap up replacing the fork oil on my '05 FJR. I followed the directions from the FJRTech site and also referenced the FSM. I get the bike off the stnds and the nose just dives! It would seem there is not enough "spring" to get the front of the bike to the proper height. WTF??

I was very careful to ensure the fork oil was set to the proper level. I used the same oil as last time I did this. There is no sign of any oil leaks, either. I have no idea why the front sags so much. Anybody been through this? Before I rip everything apart again I thought I would ask for some help. No sense in going through the same crap to get the same screwed up results. Any thoughts. I would appreciate some help!!

I'm not happy!! :angry2:

Based on given information, I believe you have the flat washer associated with the long spacer in the wrong place. Don't let the forks bottom out hard. You will have to loosen the triple tree bolts and remove the caps, then pull out the spacer, spring and flat washer, then reassemble so the spacer sits on the washer. IIRC.

Believe this guy. He's done it all wrong a couple of times.

Yeah, the order going into the forks is:

Spring, washer, spacer, then nut.

That's what good friends are for, to keep you humble and your feet on the ground.

What IIRC was the sequence for the FJR forks, I've forked up lots and lots of motorcycles ;) The only problem I've ever had was when a previous Yamaha fork spring blew out of the tube, missing my head by millimeters, continuing on up, bouncing off the ceiling and rebounding around the room  Ever see Men In Black and the ball that caused the North East blackout? Practical joke by the Great Attractor. He thought it was funny as hell.

Quick tip. When disassembling anything with a twin, leave one complete for reference when doubts arise. From Rads Book of Drum Brake Diagnosis ©

IT'S FRIDAY!! FLAME AWAY!!!

Alreaady took the forks off, disassembled and call it mechanic error!!

In error, I had placed the "sleeve" in over the "tube" then put the washer on. Instead, as you guys mentioned, I did springs, washer, then sleeve over the tube, the nut for the adjuster.

Do I get any points for having figured it out as soon as I typed my initial response? Honest!!

Thanks so very much for the speedy responses!! I appreciate the support!!

Cheers!!

It's Friday!!

P.S. I'm in the Detroit area... Go Red Wings!!

Nah, this isn't a good Friday thing to dogpile. Like old carbs, those parts is a pain to get all back in correctly. :dribble:

Good for you! Glad it all turned out well. ;)

Hey 'Nut ~ I gotta ask... did that schmuck say something inappropriate at a WOW meeting, or what? I couldn't help but notice that the 2 folks doing the deed appear to be wearing dresses!
Don
Fixed it for ya.

ionbeam,

I'll take the slings and arrows (or the rack) for ya any day!!

Got the front end all put together, took it off the jack and the stands, and voila.. correct height!!

Now tomorrow, on to a coolant flush for the FJR!! Can you say swimming pool??

I'm hoping for a better day!!
