Im going to install the FH020AA Regulator/Rectifier and upgraded harness on a pals Gen1 FJR tomorrow and was wondering if someone would share any shortcuts about getting to the R/R.

I have a 2006 FJR so the bodywork on first gen will be new territory for me.

Jack Fleming at Roadstercycle.com supplied the components and I am really impressed with the quality of his products and the speedy service.

Thanks

Ummmm, I don't want to come off sounding like a jerk but if you do have a 2006 that's a Gen 2... 2003-2005 is gen 1.

Nope. I just meant that I think you are asking for the wrong help. You want help with gen 2 not gen 1, I think...

OP is installing the RR on a GEN I, seems pretty basic to me.

If you're comfortable with your GEN II, the GEN I body work isn't all that much different. Take plenty of pics on the dis-assembly.

Good luck!

On the Gen I the 4 dash panels need to be removed and the left side faring needs to have at least the top edge and trailing edge screws removed so you can gain access to the R/R which is mounted up on the left side frame behind the radiator fill assembly. The inner left side black panels have a couple of Philips head 1/2 turn screws which need to be removed. You may need to remove the mounting screws and move the radiator fill assembly out of the way to get to the back R/R mounting screw. The stator connector and the voltage output connector have a fiddly retaining clip that has to be released for the connector to come off.

The heavy gauge R/R voltage output wires go to a stud on the starter relay on the lower right side of the bike, the right side faring needs to be removed to see the starter relay. The heavy battery cable attaches to the R/R wire on the starter relay stud.

You can go to the Yamaha web site and look at the owners manual for the Gen I and it will give you a quickie guide to removing the dash panels.
