I'm trying to get an '86 radian that's been in the garage running again for a friend.

Got everything back together, but when I crank it, it instantly runs up to redline and stays there, with no throttle input. I suspect the carbs, but don't know what in the carbs to look for. All throttle linkage is operating properly, and not binding open.

The carbs were pulled off, cleaned, and flow tested on a bench about 1 1/2 years ago, and haven't been back on the bike since. Is it possible that one of the internal parts is stuck open and flowing gas? What should I look for? I don't have a lot of experience with carburators.

+1 on what Rogue said. Very common on older bikes. Look carefully to see that all the boots are completely on.

This is what a couple of boots looked like on an '85 of mine:

The gotcha was that the split was completely covered by the bands. Two of four looked like this. I'm petty sure you will find a vacuum leak.

I had the throttle cable adjustment out of whack...

This is why I never could work for a Help Desk.

Glad you found the som'bitch and it was a fast, easy, cheap fix!!

No, you may think you found the problem, but it has to be something way more complicated. I would suspect a bent camshaft. That should keep you busy........ :D

I think it's the carburator belt that's too tight.

Maybe it's a fuel injection problem....

No... It has to be that he's running unleaded fuel in a machine that needs lead.... the fuel isn't heavy enough and makes the engine race away.....

No.... It has to be the retarder. It must be the retarder. That darn engine brake isn't working right.

Glad to hear that it was an easy adjustment.
