I'll be in LA on Friday...The better half and I are taking a little vacation before the baby comes in September. No more DINK, damnit but its been nice.

This will be a fly in and rent a car deal...no FJR or rent a bike for that matter.

Anyway we are visting friends in the Studio City area til Tuesday (my 43rd B-day BTY) when we head to Carmel. I need to know about the Pacific Coast Highway. I was thinking of driving it all the way from Ventura blvd. to Carmel. Is that possible? I figure its 300miles but we have all day and will probably stop and do the picture thingy!! Is that a nice drive?

Any suggestions?

After Carmel we head to San Francisco and do the Alcatraz tour and visit her sister.

Thanks,

Jeff

No -- not possible. More than one way to the PCH in LA, but here's an easy way from where you'll be, and since you mentioned Ventura Blvd. as your initial route point:

Take Ventura Blvd. west until you get to Topanga Canyon Blvd. Go left through the coastal range to the ocean and turn right on Pacific Coast Highway where Topanga tees into it. Follow that all the way to Oxnard or just past (along coast). Then take the 101 north through Santa Barbara (I believe it is also designated Hwy 1 through this stretch). At San Luis Obispo, 101 and 1 split. Take 1 to the coast and enjoy the beautiful drive to Carmel. (Unfortunately, this time of year, you might encounter coastal fog or haze, diminishing the views along that route.)

Yep to what ex said. Careful following the split in SLO. You go through town and the signage for 1 is small and easily missed. NOTICE: Gas up in SLO before hitting the coast, otherwise you will enjoy $5/gallon (or higher) gas at the 3 or 4 gas stations between San Simeon and Carmel.

Yep, to what(?) the Twowheelnut said :biggrinsmiley: . Coming from the South and heading North on CA. 101, look for Highway 1/Morro Bay. You will exit onto Santa Rosa Blvd. You will think you are driving straight into town but trust me (?) you will be exiting! Once you pass Foothill Blvd. (major stoplight and gas = Texaco/Standard) then proceed west until you see the Cal Poly State University sign on the right at another stop light. Once you are past that, you are in the Green! Head to Morro Bay and north all the way to Carmel.

I ride the short of this route every day, and to Carmel once a month and back on "the One". From SLO to Carmel. It is only 100 miles or so, and 2 hours of MC riding time, unless you stop to count the whales. The "whales" are the MoHo's in your path, that you will need to pass. I always try to go to Carmel on a Tuesday, to "attempt" to avoid the traffic!

cheers, :yahoo:
