I was running late to work a few minutes this morning. I take back roads to stay away from traffic. So I check my time and if I pick up my speed a little I should make it to work just fine. Where I live are a few up and down small wooded hills. Yes, deer country. Well, I tagged one. He jumped up from the steep ditch and ran right in front of me. All in a split second. Oddly enough, I remembered reading about deer from one of the threads here. And I remembed to NOT swerve but to intentionally hit it........ and thats what I did. I hit the brakes, turned in to him, let off the brakes and hit him direct.
After my trap door locked tighter I went into a high speed wabble. And after correcting that I calmed down. Thats when it all hit me.......... I'm alive!.
The first thing I remember seeing were the antlers. Thinking he was going to cut me in half. Luckly and by the grace of God, every thing was about timing. I am so glad I chose to hit him instead of him hitting me.
He bike is a 2004 FJR with under 25,000 miles on it. I think it is a total loss. Whole front in is shattered. Front forks and tire seems to be OK. Right side all scratched. Right luggage rack and fairing broken. Not too sure what else is screwed up. I limped the bike home and drove my Jette in to work. Will up date later.
One of the guys I work with lost his best friend the same way 5 days ago. But he tried to swerve around the deer and crashed. Sadly, we was not wearing a helmet and died at the seen.
In closing I would like to say, thank you for this forum. And to those who wrote about the experiences. Because of them sharing the words I was able to read and prepare. Thank you!
