I'm wondering if I can keep the four-setting Honda controller and wiring harness but use the aftermarket (Symtec, Dual Star, etc..) elements in place of the Honda grips... I've noticed that MUCH more vibration is transmitted to my hands now with the rock-hard Honda grips and think BMW grips would be a good substitute. I had the BMW/Dual Stars on my '04 & really liked that combo. I went with the Honda's this time for the "factory" look/easier install, but now those hard grips change things. I will say they crank the heat in a hurry.

I know Dual-Star's for example have 3 wires off the grips (Honda/2) and I know many only use 2 anyway to actually reduce the heat output. So I guess it comes down to which 2 and the resistance/wattage specs.

Anyone tried this or have the specs to know it will work safely?

TIA

The tape heaters are in the same wattage range as the power controller in the Honda kit,. You should be safe to use tape heaters with any of the Yamaha controllers as well as the Honda controller. The cheapie controller that looks like the Yamaha Gen I controller can't/shouldn't be used to power tape heaters.

Ditto on the grip puppies. I have the Honda heated grips on my bike and after months of riding I added the grip puppies. They help a lot with reducing vibration and the slightly extra diameter isn't objectionable to me (YMMV).

They slightly reduce heat reaching my hands, but that's not a big deal because the grips can crank out a lot of heat. I never went to full blast before I put the grip puppies on and I had temps in the low 20's for a whole week this past winter. Worst case I might have to go to full heat this next winter, but I'm sure there'll still be plenty of heat.

Thanks for the replies. Grip Puppies are on the way. And good to know if I want to move to the Symtec/DS's & BMW grips, that should work too. Cool.

Hey Tahoe

I'm was the first to put the Honda Heated grips on the FJR & they work so well I recommend sticking with the Honda grips.

Read this link on suspension settings: Suspension settings

If you continue reading you will find out many not only got better handling of the bike, but a serious reduction in the vibration of the handlebars. Reduced vibration due to overly soft suspension settings letting the vibes get to your hands.

You got nothing to lose...the adjustments are free. :yahoo:
