How can we get insurance companies to discount for ATTGATT?

I wear riding gear for my own comfort, and safety. I don't need an insurance company to help me make the decision. However when you read the statistics about full face helmets and fully geared riders vs the other extremes, it sure seems that ATTGATT riders should get a discount.

Could they charge you in the rears for not being attgatt if you crashed without gear and had been receiving the discount? That would seem reasonable to me.

I agree with your idea. Yes they can charge back the difference.

Example: You tell you insurance company that you are a non-smoker. You pay the non smoker rates for ten years then kick the bucket from lung cancer from smoking. What happens is the insurance company short pays the policy based on the difference in rates from non=smoker to smoker rates.

This is an interesting idea...

I would suspect though... That it would open a 'political' can of worms for the insurance company. Since one big chunk of riders feels helmet adverse, offering a discount for wearing it (as well as other gear), would only ruffle their feathers.

I'm sure they'd then start lobbying for a 'loud pipes' discount.

I could hear the discussion at Sturgis now. "Don't use <insert company here> because they discriminate against us for not wearing helmets."

Blah, blah, blah.

Edit: and of course Fencer would probably want his 'Deer Whistle' discount :D

I find that among sportbikers (my previous 20 years worth of riding), ATGATT riders tend to get in the most accidents and more severe accidents. For many (not all) of them, wearing the kangaroo leather suit with the race puks velcro'd on, the back protector, armored boots, and kevlar gloves they feel they have a safety net and basically race on the road. They push their bikes closer to the limits than those wearing less gear and riding more conservatively. While the extent of their injuries may be reduced, the likelihood and severity of an accident are increased.

So I think ATGATT riders should pay more. :yahoo:

yeah but WTF do you know moron :ROLF"

...just kidding

Actually to contribute in a more positive way, I doubt insurance companies will ever go for any discount mechanism BUT the plus is that they do tend to cover the cost of replacement if you damage your helmet of leathers in a wreck

It's a good idea IMO cuz I'd get a discount.

But, insurance companies, as a whole, aren't interested in saving you money no matter what their commercials say.

Kevin, my experience is different than yours. When I had a bad get off in 2002, American Family refused to pay for any of my damaged gear. When I told them I was required by law to wear a helmet, thus they were required to cover it, they reluctantly did so. However, my GEICO policy does have a riding gear provision.

your dog keeps freakin me out!

Actually, sounds like you have had mixed experience. on the one hand you had American Family and they didnt want to cover their obligations untill you held their feet to the fire. O the other hand it sounds like Geico openly recognizes this as part of what they have to/are willing to cover.

Ins Companies are like any company they want your money but they dont want to pay out for anything. On the one hand can you blame them, their in the buisness of making money. On the other you need to be in buisness for your self and make sure you get services for fees paid.
