Hey all, I replaced my battery today, without much trouble. I got everything back together, but now I cant get the knobs back on for headlight adjustments. When I push it on to try to put the little screw in, the post pushes into the dash. I see that it is threaded, but when I took it apart, I only unscrewed the little screws and it came right off. Is there a nut that goes on the threads of the post to keep it out far enough? Thanks. Probably a really dumb question, and probably a really simple answer.

With the small set screw removed the knob ship on the post. The post has a flat spot, the knob has to aligned to that and

on it'll go. Put the set screw back in and your're all set.

There is a nut for the threaded part. This holds it in the dash plastic panel......... after you took the knob off, you would have seen it. There is also a circlip on the cable adapter..... sorry can't copy the parts fische, look up Headlight item 8 (nut) and item 7 (circlip).

You may be suffering from a previous mechanic over-tightening the nut and splitting off the threaded bush:

Which results in no nut holding the spindle in place.

You'll just have to be very gentle putting the knob on.

That sounds like exactly what happened. Plus, pay attention to the nipple lining up when the slot. If that nipple isn't in there right, your alignment will be off.

Thanks everyone. I was afraid the nuts were missing. Guess i am going to have to be creative. There has to be a way, because the p.o. got them on.

Vic, why do I feel like this is some sort of subliminal message? ;)

Nope! No subliminal message, Rob. Get your mind out of the gutter. You need to go ride. Perfect timing, EOM is just around the corner. :D

Tip: Next time you need to take those panels off, don't remove the headlight adjuster knobs. Just take the various fasteners from the panels, then reach behind 'em and unscrew the knurled cable fittings. You might want to put a zip tie on the cable just below the knurled fastener to prevent it from sliding down along the cable. It takes a bit of finesse to reattach the things, and you must take care to not cross thread, but in all I find it easier than messing about with trying to align those dratted nipples

+1

The Yamaha manual doesn't always give you the easiest method of accomplishing a task. ;) After 8 years and over 100,000 miles, I have never taken those knobs off my 2007 and I've had the plastics off my bike many times for maintenance and mods. It's just a square speedometer cable attachment that's easily removed with the knurled nut.
