how does an FZ1 vs an R1 compare as a track bike

I sold my 04 R1 to get the FJR.

The One is THE ONE for the track. No compromise, no holds barrred, take no prisoners.

Wanna wheelie? Just ask. Wanna spool up the rear? Just ask. Wanna do a stoppie from 175? Just ask.

But it's a pain in the butt for city or slabbing. City takes too much effort and slab takes too much out of you.

The FZ line, being a standard, is easier in the real world and it functions OK on the track, but don't expect to win any championships on it.....

I know folks like the fz6 on the track, but I dont hear a lot about the 1.

You have got it real bad, don't you?
YES, and I'm trying to controll it. I have told myself I will not spend more than $4k for another toy, I have seen some pop up here and there in my price range and have managed to reason myself not to buy (YET). Although I was at a dealer yest, and tried on a CBR, Gixxer and R1 (all at the same dealer, since I happened to be in the hood).

The also had a c 14 on the floor. FWIW I did not find the seating to be any more aggressive than the feej. I did however notice the can is STILL very ugly and poke out 4 inches or so to the rear past the sidebag. If they re-did the pipe by the time it came time to shop for a new bike, I would def look hard at it.

In the right hands it performs very well. But remember, it's much heavier and will tire you out quickly. Here's a link of mine staying ahead of an 600 Racer. The 600 has a cam mounted in the windshield.https://94octane.com/temporary/kovzJig.wmv
Flippin cool vid. I like that track too. Nice clear run off. Where is that?

Oh, the FZ1 would rock on the track. And pretty much anywhere else. Not a R1 but hey!

If you are just going to participate in track days for FUN, then the question is moot (assuming your budget is limited). Either bike will be fun and you will/can learn alot about general handling principles on either bike.

If you decide on the FZ, you will probably be upgrading the suspension much before you did the same with the R-1 because you'll be chasing an elusive poerformance windos (C'mon, "faster" is the by product of track days, isn't it?)

Should you accidently flall down, the FZ will be much cheaper to repair....plastic is expensive and is easily broken...

Track days for FUN is the goal, and the principles of biking will be a good by-product. I don't see myself becoming a "racer"

The seat of the pants grab the R-1 gives, just makes me "all-a-flutter"

I have decided to limit my budget to $4k for another toy which would put me in the 2000-2002 range for a bike

Track days are soooooo fun! I did Reg Pridmore's Class last year at Infineon with the FJR. I learned what it would do but wanted more so I bought a New FZ6 this spring. Going to do another Class a week from Monday with the 6. Infineon isn't a high speed track so it will be interesting to see how it does riding with the liter bikes.

I did a "ride behind" of one of my buddys with him on a ZRX1100 and me on my R1. We started out sorta slow but by about the third lap, he started hottin' it up a little bit. About half way through the vid, you'll see that an R1 will do 80mph power wheelies. Oh yeah, this was shot off my bike at JenningsGP in Floriduh.

It's a big file, about 70mb worth so beware if you're on dial-up.

I got to test ride an FZ1 this last weekend at the Bikes, Blues, and BBQ in Fayetteville. Not that I've got a lot of experience on "naked" liter bikes, but this one made the hooligan in me want to run to the nearest track to measure it's real ability!

The FZ1's ergonomics seemed to fit my ages' sensibilities too.

If you decide you're looking for a FZ1 in that price range let me know - it won't perform on track as well but you'll be more comfortable riding to/from the track. :)

The bike with the camera is a 600 sports bike ridden by a professional racer.

the guy in the yellow vest (45 seconds in) is another professional racer on an 03 FZ1. (Which will soon be mine).

In the right hands, the FZ1 can be quite a machine.

Wow, great video! SOOoooo, Fencer, have you purchased the FZ-1 yet?

If your going to track bike it anyway, check this out. I almost bought it. Great price. $3900. I bet you can even shave another hundred or two off, he's kinda desperate to sell. (You didn't hear that from me....)

There is minor damage, a cracked fairing, small ding is gas tank, scratched clutch cover. Very minor, bike tipped over. You can tell from the pics it was a drop not a lowside.
