How smooth is the auto-clutch version?

I think it's the AE model in the States and the AS model in Europe (why can't they be consistent in their model naming?)

My 03FJR is a little clunky when shifting up through the lower gears. Does the clever electronics in the YCC-S bikes give smoother changes on the upshift? I understand that they alter the timing and engine revs to make the change so does this result in a better change than using a hand-operated clutch?

Thanks

Thanks starcruiser but 'BAMB' (a new adjective for me) probably suggests more about the 'speed' of the change and not much about the 'quality' of the change. So, does it still make clunky changes like the manual or is all this smoothed out by the electronics?

I gather from your post that you enjoy riding the AE which must be a good sign.

Thanks

I'd sure hate to have it miss a shift when I was in tight! I would always worry about the paddle not working when I really neeeded it.

But then, I'm sure I could miss a shift of two when I really needed it too!

Sounds like fun. And an add bonus is you don't have to worry about bending the clutch lever if you crash when you miss that shift! :yahoo:

starcruiser - another question for you. Since you say it is the most fun you've experienced in 40 years, how do you rate low-speed manoeuvrability with no clutch? Did you get used to it quick? Riding my 03FJR in traffic, I find I feather the clutch an awful lot and without it, I think I would have to balance throttle and brake which seems to be trickier since both of these are on the right side of the bars and operated by the same hand. Now, if they could shift the brake lever to the left...

Yes, I got used to it quick.....very quick as my driveway up to my garage is about a 45dg slope straight up and is short. Looks more like a ski slope than a driveway...All the neighborhood kids use it to come down on their 4 wheelers so they can get enough speed coming down to do several 360 spins at the bottom…I was worried about it at first, but I found it was easier getting up the driveway and into the garage than with my V-65......To get out, I used to have back the V-65 bike down the driveway in a controlled slide (front brake locked).....but with ABS on FJR it's no problem, I’m THRILLED!! Used to scare me a little getting it out.......the only downside to the whole thing is not being able to revving the motor at a stop.....I sorta, maybe miss that a little, but the tradeoffs are well worth it....No, I don’t miss that at all!!!!

The shifting on the AE is like a BAT OUT OF HELL!!!!!!! I can shift up a gear 2 gears and back down 2 gears before you could even get your foot under your foot shifter....Now I know why F1 shifting is that big of an advantage and why it comes standard on most Ferraris now.... Instead of spending $250,000 on a Ferrari, I got something just as fast on the straightaways, faster in the turns and more fun to drive for only under $14,000 !!! Just too freaking kwel!!!!! Can't wait to hit the back roads again this weekend...

Don't worry about your left hand....it'd be doing what it should of been doing for you all along, HANGING ON!!!
