From today's Mirror.co.uk:

BIKER BEATS COPS AT 170MPH

10/05/2007

A BIKER was clocked by a radar trap at 170mph - and avoided cops because he was traveling so fast.

Police didn't even have time to take down his registration number as he roared past their handheld speed gun.

All they saw was a flash of yellow on his bike. They also think he was wearing a blue jacket.

Now they are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the demon rider on the A47 at Terrington St John in Norfolk on Saturday afternoon.

Insp Julian Moulton last night slammed the biker's recklessness. He said: "He not only put himself in danger but other unsuspecting road users too."

The fastest convicted speeder was Daniel Nicks, 34, who was caught doing 175mph on a Honda bike in Herts in 2000 after filming himself. He was jailed for six weeks and banned for two years.

Sure you can outrun an airplane and a radio. It isn't easy, and it isn't advisable, but it is certainly possible.

I have had more than one occasion where I have clocked someone at extreme speeds never to see them again.

There was this one time, at band camp..... Seriously though, I was monitoring I-5 one Sunday morning when I got a guy on a bike going 134 in a 50 southbound. I took off after him hoping it was just a burst of speed and not a sustained speed. By the time I was 1/2 mile into it, I got on the ODOT radio channel and asked them to monitor the cameras to tell me where he was. When I got 1 mile into going after him, ODOT informed me he was a good 2 miles ahead of me already and was going so fast, they only had glimpses of him on each camera. I got off at the next exit as there was no way I was ever going to catch him.

So, let's pretend that Portland had a helicopter or an airplane (we do have several airplanes, but they are more for covert surveillance), but let's assume it was up that morning, AND was already in position. What's it going to do other than follow? Tell ground units how much distance they've lost? I could have told the Salem PD that this guy was coming, but unless we had officers at EVERY exit waiting (not possible in this state with only 4 State Troopers left on the payroll), he was gone. Sure, the airplane could have possibly followed him to where ever he was going, but to what extent? Three counties over? Possibly, but by then, a few side roads here and there and the air unit isn't going to have the easiest time recognizing which road the guy is on to coordinate with the other units. Oh yeah, let's not forget about the communication aspect. Once the guy gets two counties away, communication is going to be really difficult. My agency can only communicate with our own county plus the four surrounding counties. Once the person breaks through one of the surrounding counties, direct communication isn't possible. If you've ever heard a pursuit that wasn't "real time", but was rather relayed, you'll understand that it isn't really communication at that point.

A person with the will to get away that doesn't care about the consequences will typically get away if they are smart about how to do it. Thankfully, the most common type that does this is meth induced, thus not smart. It isn't pretty, and it isn't what the good people of society want to hear, but it is a sad reality.

But, if it's worth going to jail for, having your vehicle seized and sold at auction, the suspension of your license and the insanely high fine, not to mention the risk to your own life and the life of others for your endeavor, go for it!

interesting post ponyfool!

Also -- I believe that if the speeder is a habitual speed freak --

Bad things will eventually catch up (jail, wrecks, or worse) eventually no matter how fast you can go.

(BTW -- if you're fast and smart -- track days are the way to go! off the street, and much safer)

Amen. Even if it weren't for the legal consequences, the small picture of my wife & kids taped over the center of my tachometer is what really helps me keep my speed in check (for the most part).
