Had a little oops with the FJR. Really not alot of ground clearance. Left a friend's uphill driveway onto the street and scraped ( OK, a little more than a scape)the header.

I found a couple of threads from a couple of years back, I'm not the first to damage the header, so I don't feel so bad. The consensus is that it should be fixed so when I get my estimate it will be an insurance issue. I would like opinions as to how soon I need to get it done. A performance loss is one thing, but I sure don't want to do any engine damage!

Ouch! That left a mark.

That looks like a 'replace' not 'repair'. Maybe one of the aftermarket header guys will have a stocker for ya.

I hit something with my car many years ago. Had the same effect on my exhaust. I was told that the resulting restriction of the exhaust could lead to burned valves.

Thanks for getting my picture up here. And yes it will be replace but is it urgent?

This is kind of a wishy-washy reply. One header pipe is ~50% restricted, at 1k rpm to 5k rpm it probably isn't such a big deal. At elevated rpms the cylinder to cylinder power balance and exhaust port temperature will become an issue. At what engine speed does exhaust flow start to become a problem? Dunno. How long can you run at elevated engine speed before it becomes a problem? Dunno. If you keep the rpms down and power demand down you can probably go a long time with that damage.

I have the same problem with my '06, although not so severe. Was planning to just heat the pipe and pull out the dent. Does anyone know if it is a single or double wall tube?

Drill a couple of holes in the dent to let the extra pressure out. drinks.gif
That's what I like about John. You can depend on him to give some good, sound, practical advice. Of course the pipes might be just a tad louder, so i would follow it up by going to the local HD emporium and purchasing the requisite beanie helmet and wife-beater shirt.

Things to do at the Harley store;

1) Do loudly voice your disgust with the current helmet laws. Extra points if you can link them to the pseudo-pinko-commies currently occupying the White House. The helmet

laws, of course, predate them by many years, but remember, you're at the Harley shop, check your logic at the door.

2) Do mention to one and all about your upcoming 100 mile trip you're planning. They just love LD riders there.

3) Do check out the new bikes. Not only are the surprisingly affordable, but you get a hell of a lot ot chrome for the price.

4) Do mention, as many times as possible, that "loud pipes save lives". Buy a couple of decals.

Things to NOT do at the Harley store;

1) Do NOT, under any circumstances, ride your FJR there. Remember, flaunting a civilized, Japanese, gas-sipping performance machine may intrude upon the "Harley

Experience."

2) Show up at the door in anything but black? I don't think so.

3) Do NOT, under any circumstances, enter the establishment singing show tunes, and inquiring about rainbow decals. (Sadly, Old Michael tried to order his yellow

helmet here last year and got the crap beaten out of him. He then felt he had to make up his "I drove my motorcycle off the road story" to cover his foolishness. We love

you Michael. (In the acceptable, manly way, not the rainbow way. You want the rainbow way, talk to John, I've heard he cuddles).

There's an '05 one on eBay for $80. Needs some clean up and has a small dent or two.

Update : :yahoo: all is good now, bought header from another member. Shipped all the way across the country and installed in a week. Thanks Strike3, my trip to Yellowstone next week is saved.

Went for a quick 150km coffee ride tonight. :clapping: :clapping:
