I had a customer bring in his r1100rs BMW today with the final drive leaking. I've known this bike since new with two owners and this will make the third time I've rebuilt the final drive. 90k on the ODO. Each time I've done all the shims by the book and checked lash. It's just poor design asking a single row ball bearing to take the side load of the ring gear. The FJR is much easier to live with.

I would like to think that BMW has improved things in the 20+ years since this bike made its debut. It doesn't change the fact that, in terms of reliability, BringMoreWallet still has a very long way to go! German engineering is usually elegant and often innovative but not necessarily practical or reliable.

Nice to know that Yamaha has stayed with something tried and true fro the last 30 years, our final drive is virtually the same unit that graced the 1987 Yamaha Venture Royale. When something is as bullet proof as one of these it strengthens the breed. It's a shame that several of the IBR participants carried an extra BMW final drive - Just In Case - all over the country during the rally. Shame on BMW for such a engineering fo-pah, and not recognizing their mistake and issuing an upgrade unit under a recall.

I think I'll go out to the stable and hug my AE now

Thanks Ray.

I like throwing stones at such an easy target.

Hugged mine on the commute to work this morning, and will hug her again on the way home.

In a way it's kinda sad you need to hug an inanimate machine like an FJR, instead of real people in your life, but totaly understand...ff

One of my riding partners has a 2016 R 1200 RS. He has less than 25,000 miles and on his 4th water pump. It is also leaking, and the BMW mechanic has not replaced it believing there is a bigger problem. BMW Corporate has not been in contact with him. It has been almost 1 year since the first water pump. Can't make this up.
