I came from a Goldwing. I got to get used to this new seat. Only a 100 mile ride too.

For me, there's no getting used to a stock seat. The only OEM seat that came close to satisfying my butt was the BMW comfort seat that I put on the RT. But while it was way more comfortable than stock, it didn't provide all day long comfort. IIRC, that was the first bike I put a Russell Day-Long on. I'm thankful manufacturers don't spend too much time on making a comfortable seat. I mean, there's no way to design a single seat and satisfy every butt anyway so what's the point in trying?

I'm making arrangements this week to send off the seat to either Russell or Laam. The seat is the last ergonomic change required before FJR-nirvana... I think.

Like every manufacturer, Yamaha realizes that 1) everyone's anatomy - and preferences in a saddle - differs and 2) manufacturing costs are kept down by supplying an OEM saddle that will be "good enough" for the "average" rider - who probably rides < 3,000 miles/year.

It's the same in the bicycle world. So many options available, and so few 'real' riders who keep their original saddle.

So Yamaha - and everyone else - offers a saddle that will work well enough on a test ride. You know, when you're distracted by all of those other attributes of a new bike and probable only giving slight attention to your a$$.

And now, Goldilocks, it's up to you do figure out which aftermarket saddle is "just right".

And then pay until your a$$ hurts!

It's okay - you're worth it.

I'm not saying it couldn't be improved but I have not found it necessary to replace the stock saddle. (Maybe I'm just cheap) I do around 25,000 miles a year which is pretty good for living in the frozen North! Hips and knees are bigger issues than butt for me. I would be happier with a seat that raised me up a couple of inches. 6'3" with 34" inseam makes me a bit cramped. I thought about lowering the footpegs but worry about clearance.

I lowered the pegs with MCL peg lowers. They help immensely, but you will scrape them in the twisties. It's simply a matter of compromise. I chose to compromise scraping pegs for comfort. Wasn't a difficult decision for me.

I had a Corbin on my Bandit. It was much better than stock. I got to check out a Russel day long. I don't like the way the stock seat slants forward and tries to crush the jewels too. The Bandit was the same way before the Corbin.

I have over 10,000 miles on my stock OEM with several 500+ mile days and many 300+ mile day in twisties -- no problems-- comfy infact.

of course I have 28,000 miles on the 153mm wide seat on my late 2008 bicycle seat and 14,000 on my 2007 bicycle ---so the FJR is pretty plush for me

+1

Just got a Russell about 3 weeks ago. Did 425 miles yesterday on a bunch southern Missouri twisty's, not even a hint of a sore butt today. The stock seat pretty much sucks.

GigaHz- I couldn't help but to notice your first bike was a 72 Suzuki 90. That happened to be my first bike too, did you have the TS or TC?

I opted for a Laam and couldn't be happier. Stock seat was good for maybe 2 hrs. I've done 6-8 hour days on the Laam no problem. Disclaimer: I am not a died in the wool LD rider. I will say that my recent trip to Sturgis and surrounding areas would have been tough on the stock seat, Laam made the seat a non issue. Beautiful workmanship, great price.

My first bike was a 1970 Suzuki TS90 "Honcho". Bought it new and rode the wheels off it. It was a great little bike!

I don't remember. I do remember it had the 8 speed transmission, or a 4 speed with the high - low range. It was green.

I think the OEM seat is pretty good. Far better than any of the many Beemer seats I've had. May try the Spencerizing route this winter to see how that goes. At a small fraction of the price of a RDL or other custom seat it is worth a try.

I've never swapped out seats on any of my bikes. The FJR stock seat is by far the most comfortable I've ever had. I did 700 mile days on my B12 stocker, not that was less than pleasant! I find that your butt acclimates with the more miles you get in.

The only seat I considered changing was on the zx14. It did not have a high enough rear section to keep me from sliding back under hard acceleration.

Laam seat on order. Much less expensive than a RDL. I figure it can't hurt to try it before considering a RDL (no pun intended).

I went to Redding Ca. to have Rick Meyer do a seat for me. I figured if I brought the FJR and my posterior I could get it done right the first time.

That happened, I arrived at Rick's at 9:am and was out by noon. I had a good time at his shop BS' ing with customers and watching my seat being constructed specifically for my back side.

The results were outstanding. The next day I did just short of a 600 mile ride and I was very happy with my new found custom seat.

That seat is the best farkle ever.

GigaHZ,

Lots of talk about Russel seats on here. I understand they are comfy. They have to be for so many FJR pilots to put them on their Feej's. I just can't do it. Sorry guys but they are just not the right look and ruin the nice lines of the bike. But looks be damned, they must work. I'm a fan of Alaska Sheepskins. I'm way past 600 mile days no matter what seat is on the FJR. Just not what I would call fun. To each their own. I get good results from the Yamaha Touring seat. I can ride 200-300 miles and open the bottle of Jack without discomfort. Love the FJR. Took a 2 1/2 hour ride up through the NC mountains, Sapphire, Cashiers and had a ball. Temp was in the low to mid 60's up there and was perfect for riding. Life is Good!
