I Don't Expect A Big FJR Update In 2010

I doubt there will be an upgrade either, and it's not because of accounting losses. There simply isn't anything leading the SST pack that puts Mamayama in the position the C10 was. I don't believe the market is demanding change, and I don't believe there was ever speculation that the market might be big enough to support drastic change. From a marketing and sales standpoint, there is no reason to build and sell WonderBike in a tiny market segment if you already sell DarnGoodBike in that segment.

However, if there was going to be an upgrade of any sort, they didn't start thinking about it last quarter. Engineering changes take MONTHS at the factory level. Yes, sourcing and engineering and contracting and procurement for a simple screw change can take forever. Heck, they're probably having meetings about whether the market will support non-sparkly paint for 2010 because it'll save them $4 per unit, but they're doing that NOW. 2010 might bring us a red one, but only because the paint might be less expensive.

I'd be thrilled to see the 2010 with the V-Max motor and a diet, but it ain't gonna happen.

I DO believe Honda will kill the ST1300 after this years' production. They've done it before, and they have lots of reason to do it again. If the C14 miraculously turns out to be everyone's favorite kind of fried rice and/or BMW starts giving away free beer, then Yamaha would be well served to stop FJR production too. The numbers just aren't there!

Good reading Dude. I bet we get a "new and exciting update" to the paint and maybe logo for '10. But I don't see the FJR going away. Cutbacks at corporate are inevitable though. Just because some model upgrades have been designed doesn't mean they won't hold back on production to save money. I thought about this a bit when Yamaha didn't show up at NAFO last July, thinking about all the bikes sitting in [our Roseburg] local dealerships unsold. If we are lucky in the next couple years they may throw in heated grips on new FJR A models, since they are putting them on the AE models anyway. Something like that would be an excuseto raise the MSRP higher than normal. But major changes would surprise me.

I'm with you on that. The VMax engine in the FJR1800 at some point in the future makes a lot of sense. A single engine and drive train for both models. Hopefully they will do that by the time I'm ready to replace my '05, like maybe in 2015 or so. The problem with the vMax today is the price. That is one expensive naked bike.

Have you guys seen the wet weight of that thing? At 685 lbs. it's a porker. I have my doubts as to fitting that motor into a sport-touring package and losing weight. FJR is fat enough as is.

Hmm. No I didn't notice the weight. That's a definite drawback.

And..., having had, briefly, a previous generation V-Max (w/Supertrapps) -- the power available can be downright 'scary'. Especially when you (foolishly) open-up all of the bifurcated intake manifold (V-Boost) and run all the engine on all the carbs all the time....!! Then, add-in the previous 'twisty' chassis -- well, it was a hand-full (at least for me...).

I don't think my Sport-Tourer needs that much power....?
