Okay, I've read about a million threads on tires. Brain is now soup.

I need some serious advice on tire choice. Most of my riding is commuting (sux, but reality) to the tune of 100 miles / day. I need mileage, I am straight up most of the time.

Oooh! Fresh fodder for the Never-Ending-Pointless-Recurring-Thread.

Clicky here for all I'm going to say on the issue. I think the Avons rock!

Scab,

I'm also guilty of too many tire thread readings. However I did decide on the Avons when I replaced last time. Unfortunately about 80% of my riding is commuting. I think the Avon performs very well at that task and also a very competent performer when I get into the twisty mountain roads also. Next time I will try the Pirelli Stada EMS so I'll have a good comparison. From my reading you won't go wrong with either. Flip a coin if you must, just get em on and go ride.

I have over 4k on the Metzler Z6, and I am very happy with them.

I have tried the Pilots and the Avons, and I like the Z6's the best.

I found that the front Avon didn't last much longer than the back, and it cuped easily.

The pilot also cupped, but at least I got good mileage from them.

The Z6's seem to have the best traction and so far seem to be wearing well.

There has been some reports of belt seperation on the metzlers fronts, but it seems to happen more on the Z4's

That's an interesting observation. Not what I have found at all. I get signifcantly more mileage out of the front Avon with little cupping until near the very end of its life.

Cupping? On an Avon or P.R.? Hmmmm, what tire pressures were you running? I had bad cupping on my OEM 'Stones, but they are known for this effect because of their tread design, which is not at all similar to the Avons or Michelins.

Call me a chicken and move my name to that column, but it would only take one separation to ruin my riding day. I really hope they have corrected any carcass problems with the Z-6, but I didn't care or the OEM Z-4s.

Tire are an expendable wear item. You are going to use them up and discard the worn tires. Why not try different brands and see what fits your style the best?

Avons seem to be the tire of choice for longest mileage (running 40-42 lbs. pressure). I'm currently using Michelins Pilot Roads because of my rebellious nature when everyone is running Avons. :D (I've used 'Stones, P.R.s and Avons in the past) I believe I will try a set of Diablo Stradas next. Hey, if I don't like them, they'll be worn out in 6-8 months or so anyway...if I really don't like them, they'll get replaced, like the OEM Metzs on the '05.

GONE.

This round goes to the Avons.

Thanks everybody.

You'll probably be very happy with the Avons.

And keep reading the never ending threads. When you are ready for your next tires, there will probably be another brand that has risen to the top of the forum discussion.

Let us know what you think of the Avons!

Just bought an '05 with Stones on it. The front is starting to get some light cupping at just under 1,500 miles, so reading the high mileage figures everyone is getting, the previous owner must have been running low tire pressure.

My '05 came with the stones. Currently, have 6500 miles on 'em. Front is cupping, rear is pretty thin in the middle.

The OEM Bridgestone BT-020's on my '04 FJR ran 10,745 miles before I replaced them. They probably could have gone to about 11,500 miles before fully hitting the wear bars. The tires were run at 42/42 psi and both the front and rear tires hit the wear bars at about the same time. The front Bridgestone started cupping at about 5000 miles and was fairly badly cupped when replaced.

Replaced with Avons, currently have just under 13,000 miles on the Avons, expect them to go to around 13,500 miles before fully hitting the wear bars. VERY minor cupping on the front tire, both front and rear tires will hit the wear bars at about the same time, the Avons were run at a consistent 42/42 psi. New set of Avons are in the garage ready to be mounted shortly.

I got 5000 out of my OEM Bridgestone rear tire AND check the tire pressure regularly -- and I mean NO tread left in middle and beginning to look like cord would be showing in a couple hundred miles.

Must be my throttle hand, or more likely, the fact that I ride the FJR two up so often, since my Blackbird gets a lot of the one up miles. I bought another rear stone to run while the front wore out (my typical bike experience is almost two rears to one front). But I'm not at all sure the front won't be too cupped and worn well before the second rear 020 stone is done.

I have a pair of Pilot Roads wrapped up and in a box . . . ready to go on when the stones are done.

If I can get 13,000 with avons, I will be thrilled. I am used to running Elites on my old bike - +20,000 on rear.
