This was sent to me by a friend and I thought it worthy to pass along. Maybe most know but I didn't.

..........................................................................................

...........................

I knew about the red light on cars, but not the *677. It was about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. *Lauren's parents have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc. *

Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called *677 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way.

Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her.

One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.

I never knew about the *677 Cell Phone Feature, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a safe & quiet place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them (i.e. put on your hazard lights) or call *677 like Lauren did.

Too bad the cell phone companies don't generally give you this little bit of wonderful information.

*Speaking to a service representative at **Bell** Mobility confirmed that *677 was a direct link to OPP Dispatch. So, now it's your turn to let your friends know about *677.

Not so sure about the validity of this story. Check it out. What's wrong with 911? And who's Lauren?
Hmmm,

Interesting. Snoopes is quite informative. Maybe it's not so true?????????

Obviously been circulating for a few years.

Unless you can verify this personally, I'd seriously consider adding "Could be Urban Rumor" to the thread title.....hint.....hint.

I'd dial 911 before I'd try and remember any other arcane numbers that vary from state-to-state.

Any cell phone with power will dial 911 - even the ones with no contract, etc. That's why organizations that serve battered women collect them for distribution.

And if you want to look out for your loved ones, make sure their phones are new enough to be GPS enabled. That way authorities can locate them if they dial 911 and they're lost or disoriented.

My apologies for posting what may be crap. That was never my intention.

"But Hey! I received it in an e-mail so it must be true!" Bad logic. My bad.

Snopes is a great resource and notice that they don't outright say it's a myth. They try and dissect the elements of things because the best urban rumors have seeds of truth.

I know I have it bookmarked and one of my startup tabs in my browser.

In a way...this board is the Snopes of FJR's. Correct and helpful information is praised and rewarded. Flaky stuff falls off the bottom and sometimes teased.

Hope you don't mind the addition of "possible urban rumor" to the thread title....

Okay with all the fake stuff, but there are guys pretending to be cops that ***** at least 2 girls in Elk Grove so this story still has value. Just like many fake stories, there is a good reason to have them. Stories teach us lessons.

My wife and daughters have both been briefed to wait until they are in a well lit, populated area to stop for a cop, unmarked or not. The cops on the news advised the same thing during an interview regarding the Elk Grove rapists. They said, "No cop is going to begrudge a woman waiting to pull over in a safer location."

True, all true. They just advise that you acknowledge the officer's presence in some fasion - flashers, turn signal, wave, etc. The officer will then know you're not O.J.

Absolutely not as it is appropriate. :)
