Lately my wife has been working alot of evening shifts and for the past couple months has been carpooling with a male co-worker. At first I didn't mind, I would rather have someone with her in case she has car trouble or something like that, but it seems that they have become a little bit more than friends. You know the scenario, the phone calls that hangup, she starts wearing nice clothes to work, talking about him all the time, etc. I don't know what to think. If I'm out in the garage when she gets home (usually after midnight) he just drops her off and leaves, but if the lights are off in the garage and I'm in the house (they think I'm sleeping) they sit out in the car for like twenty minutes. I asked her once what they were doing, she said "just talking"....whatever. So last night I decide that I'm going to see what really goes on out there. I leave the garage door open, but turn out all the lights. About the time she usually gets home, I go out and hide in the garage and wait. In a few minutes, his car pulls into my driveway, and I'm hiding behind my bike. When his headlights shine through the garage and onto my bike, I see something that I just can't believe. The rear sprocket is already worn and hooked but the chain looks OK. Do you think I should change just the sprocket or both the chain and sprocket?

Always replace together. Chain and sprocket, not you and her.

Use the old chain to administer justice.

Not only chain and rear sprocket, but chain, rear sprocket AND drive sprocket.

Are you sure you weren't hiding behind your old Yazoo Lawn Mower? FJR's don't have chains or sprockets.

Plenty of men still left you odot, no worries.

Hey husky - did you notice anything else wrong with the bike? Good thing you saw that worn sprocket. Replace both sprockets and chain as recommended by all after market chain and sprocket people. I think it's some sort of antitrust deal goin' on.

Even though this probably isn't a very serious thread, it might be worth pointing out that the reason the sprocket teeth are hooked is that the chain has worn and elongated and no longer has its original pitch. The pitch is longer, so the sprocket had to wear to accomodate the chain's worn geometry. There can also be lube issues in play.

In any event, the conspiracy that says that you should replace the chain and BOTH sprockets is legitimate, unless you want to have a short life for the parts you replace. You might want to check the cush drive too while you're at it. Most sprocket driven rear wheels have a shock absorbing inner set of rubber guys who absorb shock. If one or more of these have failed, that can mess things up for your chain and sprockets too.

For you HD guys ......

Dear Abby,

I've never written to you before, but I really need your advice on what could be a crucial decision.

I've suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs... Phone rings but if I answer, the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with the girls a lot recently although when I ask their names she always says, "Just some friends from work, you don't know them."

I always stay awake to look out for her taxi coming home, but she always walks down the drive. Although I can hear a car driving off, as if she has gotten out of the car round the corner. Why? Maybe she wasn't in a taxi? I once picked her cell phone up just to see what time it was and she went berserk and screamed that I should never touch her phone again and why was I checking up on her.

Anyway, I have never broached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just didn't want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to really check on her.

I decided I was going to park my Harley next to the garage and then hide behind it so I could get a good view of the whole street when she came home. It was at that moment, crouching behind my Harley, that I noticed that the valve covers on my engine seemed to be leaking a little oil.

Is this something I can fix myself or should I take it back to the dealer?

Thanks, Bob
